By tnc Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 19.-——Demand for rail bonds sustained prices of the | group today around the peak for the recovery movement. Speculative rails attracted further buying on the hope the expanding trend of traffic and earnings would improve the outlook for roads in re- ceivership Gains of fractions to more than a point were marked up for Santa Fe 4s, Baltimore & Ohio 4l5s, St. Paul 5s, Rock Islana General 4s, Nickel Plate 458, Southern Railway 4s and Union Pacific 4s. Utilities held their ground, with in- ternational Telephone 5s and Interna- tional Hydroelectric 6s up a little. Also moderately higher were American Rolling Mill 4i;s, Studebaker 6s and United States Rubber 5s. Small declines were chalked up for | Alleghany 5s, Great Northern 4s, Na- tional Dairy 3%s, Walworth 4s and ‘Youngstown Sheet & Tube 3'z. Treasury loans were uneven in a narrow range. Small gains and losses also were gegeral in the foreign divi- sion. CHICAGO GRAIN Br the Associated Press. C, FAIRGHILD VOTE SET NOVEMBER 2 Holders of Aviation Firm Will Be Asked to Back Segregation. BY the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, October 19.—8tock- holders of Fairchild Aviation Corp. will be asked at a meeting, November 2, to approve segregation of the com- pany's activities into two separate companies, the shares of one of which will be distributed to present share- holders, ‘The parent corporation will retain full ownership of the Fairchild Aerial Camera Corp. and its interest in Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. The corporation’s aircraft and en- gine business and its interest in Fair- child Aircraft, Ltd., of Canada, will be transferred to a new concern, the Fairchild Engine & Airplane Corp., the shares of which will be distrib- uted on a share-for-share basis. Sherman M. Fairchild, president of the company, will remain in that ca- pacity, and will occupy the same po- sition in the new company. Fairchild said the separation of the company's activities will permit the logical expansion of the aircraft and engine manufacturing facilities with- out affecting the present sharehold- ers’ percentage ownership in the aerial camera, instrument and survey activi- ties. GROCERY VOLUMES Distribution Set in Third Quarter, | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, October 19.—Btimu- lated perjods in many years by the drought situation and the concomitant, abrupt rise of prices, some new records for both production and distribution were set down for the grocery trade during the third quarter of the current year, Bradstreet, Inc. With food hoarding among consumers, the rapid rate of buying sent retail sales for the first | 9 months 12 to 18 per cent over the comparative 1935 total. Paucity of immediate supplies prevented whole- salers from showing a sharper in- crease than 15 to 30 per cent from the previous year’s volume. Orders to manufacturers of food products during the third quarter were |in many instances double those of |a year ago, and employment for the | first 9 months of 1936 was 10 per cent [larger than in 1929. Independent retailers have taken a | distribution this year, but some of the voluntary chains have fallen behind their 1985 record. Many of the chains | have given more attention to man- ‘ager -owned stores. The development {of supermarkets has been widened | with considerable success, due to more responsible administration. Notmmstandmg the increased \o]- . that has been chiefly in stap] m \| hich a narrow profit has rule | most wholesalers have been disap- pointed with their returns thus far this | year. Although wholesale prices have | reached a 6-year high, much of this rise will not be passed on to the | public until next Spring. Food sup- plies are estimated at 5 per cent smaller than average, with consump- tion running about 12 per cent larger. FEDERAL LAND BANKS NEW YORK.
