Mr. Packer has been appointed fifst secretary of the United States Legation at Riga, The other guests were the charge d’affaires of Lithuania, Dr. Mikas Bagdonas; the second secretary of the Polish Embassy, M. Edward Kulikowski; the Chief of Protocol and Mrs. Richard South~ gate, Mr. Robert F. Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar L. Chipman, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Bohlen, Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. W. Harrison, Miss Albina Adges and the secretary of the Latvian Legation and Mme. Rudolf Smith. The United States Minister to Sweden and Mrs. Laurence A. Steinhardt are in New York after a visit with Mrs. Walter Sayre Sullivan in Charlotte, N. C. The Minister and Mrs. Steinhardt have been in this country for several weeks’ vacation and will sail chortly to return to his post. The United States Minister to Haiti, Mr. George W. Gordon, sailed today aboard the Haiti for his post after spending a vacation in this country., Senator Alben W. Barkley is expected to come to Washington and join Mrs, Barkley and their family for the week end. Mrs, Barkley returned a few days ago for the Winter season, but the Senator is in the Middle West on campaign business. Senator and Mrs. William H. King, who made a crulse to the West Indies during the late Summer, again are in their apart- ment in the Westchester. Senator and Mrs. Millard E. Tydings have gone to New York and e at the Ambassador for a short stay. Senator Elmer D. Thomas of Utah is stopping at the Dodge. The Misses Guffey, sisters of Senator Joseph F. Guffey, are ;sending this week in Pittsburgh and are expected to return to {1eir Washington home tomorrow or Saturday. Representative and Mrs. Charles N. Tobey are at the Mountain view House at Franconia, N. H., for a fortnight’s stay. The Assistant Secretary of State and Mrs. Wilbur J. Carr will arrive in New York today on the Manhattan after spending the late Summer in Europe. They are expected to come to Washington later in the day. The first secretary of the Italian Embassy, Signor Bartolomeo Mignone, who has been on vacation in Italy, arrived in New York today aboard the Rex and will come to Washington the first of the week to resume his duties at the embassy, The Assistant Secretary of Agriculture and Mrs. Milburn L. Wilson are among the passengers aboard the Manhattan arriving in New York today from England, where Mr. and Mrs. Wilson have attended an international conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland. They are expected to come to Washington tonight or tomorrow, Rear Admiral Adolphus Andrews will be joined tomorrow by Mrs. Andrews and Miss Frances Andrews, who are spending a few days in New York. Rear Admiral Edward C. Kalbfus, president of the Naval War College, who was in Washington for special duty at the Navy Department, has returned to Newport, accompanied by Mrs. Kalbfus, who joined him here last week. ———————————————————————— Left: Capt.
