FINANCIAL. BEST SINCE 1330 Recovery Curve to Continue in Autumn Months, Banking Predicts. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Business enters the final quarter assured that to date 1936 has been the best year since 1930 and confident that the recovery curve will continue to ascend during the Autumn months. Banking, official organ of the Ameri- can Bankers' Association, says today. Basic improvement has held its mo- mentum, and the weeks ahead prom- ise higher production and consump- tion levels. 1t is significant to note as the Fall geason opens that recovery this year has progressed without important in- terruption. Also the gain has been well distributed among major sec- tions of the country’s industrial fab- ric, the principal exception being egriculture, which had to contend with a serious drought, the review ndds. There is evidence that unemploy- ment is decreasing and considerable reason to believe that the actual number of employables out of work is much below current estimates. In- creasing dividends of corporations continue to give support to the mar- ket for securities and contribute to the general optimism, although they are largely influenced by the tax to be imposed on undistributed profits at the end of the year. European events are disquieting, for the possibility of more widespread trouble between the two conflicting theories of government represented in Spain’s civil war is well recognized. Rearmament, inflammatory speeches, the restlessness of nations seeking %erritorial expansion and, more spe- tifically, domestic unsettlement in France cast shadows on the future snd increase the difficulties of inter- fational economy. Nevertheless, for- gn affairs have not interrupted the srend of American business. At home the election campaign pro- eceds along lines more or less tradi- tional, and the issues are being care- ully canvassed by the politicians and y the voters. On the whole, busi- ness appears to have been little af- acted by the campaigning, the op- dimistic statement asserts. Washington Gas Earnings Off. Net earnings of the Washington Gas ®ight Co. in August showed a loss of $64,969, compared with a deficit uf! $24,220 in August, 1935, an increase of $40,749 in the comparative figures, ac- gording to the monthly report just filed with the Public Utilities Com- ission. August is the poorest month tn the year in the gas business. the ponth under review being no excep- ion. y Net operating revenues of $14.419 for the month, compared with $44.650 for August of last year, a decrease of $30,231 reflecting the effect of reduced gas rates approved December 16,1935. Increased charges for retirement of property called for in the sliding scale arrangement and expenses incurred in producing the larger volume of gas gold further account for this decrease. The operating revenues of the two District of Columbia companies, after dnter-company eliminations, during the first eight months of 1936, despite the reduced rates, increased $253.876 over the corresponding period of 1935, due to the greater volume of gas sold, resulting in net income for the period of $554,963, a decrease below the first eight months of 1935 of $173,280. Georgetown Report Also Filed. The August report of the George- town Gas Light Co. also filed with the Utilities Commission, shows & seasonal net loss of $11,622, compared with a loss in August, 1935, of $5,243, this being partly due to rate reduc- tions and other increased costs. For the first eight months of this year the Georgetown company report- ed net earnings of $4,177, against $6,318 in the like period a year ago, @ decrease of $2141. Operating revenues were $58,340 better than a Year ago, but operating expenses in- ereased by over $59,000. During the eight months’ period ending August 31, 1936, the gas sales pf the two companies were 6,647~ 375,000 cubic feet, compared with 5, B51,174,000 cubic feet during the cor- Fesponding period a year ago, an in- erease of 13.6 per cent. At the end of August these two companies had $38,034 meters in service, an increase pver August of last year of 6,110, Hull Joins K. S. Wales Firm. K. S.
