O'HARA, Associated Press Financial Writer NEW YOREK, October 1.— Wall Street financiers continue to stress the importance of a close check on { | London for gauging effects of the new international monetary pact. If there is to be a heavy repatria- tion of continental funds when the devaluation program is in actual effect, London will probably ] be the first center to feel it, because { it has been custodian of a large amount of refugee money since the first onset of fear with regard to the future of gold bloc countries. Recent London banking opinion, but prior to the devaluation an- nouncement, indicated confidence that foreigners would be in no haste to take home their capital if the ex- 14 | pected devaluation materialized. It referred to “other causes besides lack of confidence in the franc and other gold currencies” driven many Europeans to take refuge in sterling and dollars—chiefly politi- cal tension and economic uncertain- ties. Looking at the same thing with respect to dollar funds, Wall Street foreign exchange circles say they be- lleve any rush to take them home “'a | would be confined to liquid and spec- | ulative capital sent here for a spe- cific purpose. As regards investment capital of the long-term variety, it is felt owners would be under no great temptation to call it in immediately in view of rising industrial activity here. Money of this sort, it is pointed out, is kept employed where the promise of re- turns is considered most favorable. For a long time Europe has been showing a lot of interest in American securities, even during the intervals when there was no immediate threat of gold currency readjustments. Hence it is held by these authorities that as against the opportunity for profit in N i | calling back funds for conversion into depreciated currencies the owners would have to weigh possibilities of continued political unsettlement in Europe and less attractive fields for investment. ‘_ Washingtoni;hange SALES.
