MADISON, Wisc., September 30.— Senator Robert M. La Follette, Wis- consin Progressive and supporter of President Roosevelt, contended today that Gov. Alf M. Landon had been- “misled” into “glaring misstatements” in expounding his . social security views. La Follette, chairman of the Pro- gressive National Committee, asserted in a prepared statement yesterday that in a campaign address at Mil- waukee last Saturday the Republican presidential nominee attacked “some imaginary (social security) law * * * | invented to give him a plausitie campaign argument.” He said Landon made mistakes in his discussion of the social security | act’s provisions for old-age insurance, reserve funds and personal working records and that he was “extremely vague” in discussing his own program. “Only since he was nominated for the presidency,” La Follette declared, “has Gov. Landon gotten around to old-age pension legislation in his own State, and then he recommended not the enactment of such a law, but the ment to she State constitution to find out whether they want old-age pen- sions * * ¢ “Gov. Landon in his Milwaukee | address several times protested he | believes in social security, but actions | speak louder than words,” he added. | “Most strangely, however, the Gov- | ernor was misled by his unnamed ad- | visers in protesting so vehemently: ‘The Republican party will have nothing to do with any plan which involves prying into the personal working records of 26 million people,’ while at the same time he advocated pensions which are to be reduced by the ‘income of the applicants from other sources. “The prying into the personal working records in the social seeurity act * * * involves only the reporting | | by employers * * * of the wages | | which they pay their employes. | | “It is understandable that some of th low-wage paying employers who ure supporting Gov. Landon do not want to disclose to any one what wages they are paying to their em- ployes * * *.» |SOUTHEAST CITIZENS HIT WEIGHT TAX Association Also Against Conver- | sion of Gasoline Tax From submission to the people of an amend- | /' Sun. today ui Highways.
