Bank clearings in Washington in September scored a gain of $16,331,- 524.02 over the corresponding month 8 year ago, according to the monthly report made this noon by the man- sger of the Washington Clearing House. September clearings totaled $89,- | 611,954.10 as compared with $73,280,- | 430.08 in September, 1935. The can- celed-check total also was far ahead of August this year, when clearings reached $73.280.430.08, the compari- | sons with the same period last year and the previous month indicating steady business improvement in the Capital. ! Net income before dividends of the Ehesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. tn August amounted to $136,519, as eompared with $146,601, according to §he monthly report filed with the Pub- lis Utilities Commission today. Operating revenues of August were $836,630. Operating expenses, includ- fng interest, amounted to $700,111. WNet operating revenues were $225.752. Net operating income amounted to $151.214, as compared with $170,818 in August, 1935, a decrease of $19,604. Washington was served by 207.059 telephones on August 31, 1936, a net gain of 601 telephones over the pre- wious month. On August 31, 1935, there were 186,099 telephones in serv- fce. Telephone users in Washington made 20,371.000 calls in August, as compared with 19,931,000 during the pame month in 1935. Net income for the first eight months | iof this year totaled $1,351,049 in com- parison Wwith $1,270,748 in the like perlod in 1935, an increase so far in 1936 of $80,301. July. TOBACCO SALES HEAVY, WITH PRICES HIGHER By the Assoclated Press. RALEIGH. N. C., September 30.— The Federal Tobacco News Service reported fairly heavy sales and gen- erally higher prices on the officially inspected Oxford tobacco market, in the middle belt. Pirst to fifth quality lugs and prim- ing lugs continued in predominance, with some wrappers bringing as much as $62 per hundredweight. In the orange leaf -classification, B3F dropped from $33 Monday to $31 yesterday, but B4F went from $24 to $24.50. H4F orange smoking leaf in- creased from $25 to $26, and C3F or- ange cutters went from $41 to $43. In orange lugs, X3F rose from $23 Mon- day to $25 yesterday, and in orange priming lugs, P3F went from $18.50 to $21. GULF STATES STEEL RIGHTS TO BE GIVEN By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 30.—Hold- ers of Gulf States Steel Co. common stock will receive rights to purchase additional stock in the ratio of one new share for each two shares held in connection with capital readjust- ment plan, it was announced. The price at which the rights are exercisable has not been determined. Proceeds of new bond issue of §7.- 000,000 and sale of 98,750 new shares of stock will be used to retire existing 51, per cent debentures, retire the preferred stock and provide capital for expansion. The company plans to spend approximately $2,000,000 om expansion at its Gadsden, Ala, g ~
