JOHNSON DEFENDS . . WAR RECORD Challenges Lloyd George’s Criticism of “Fussy Mud-. dle” by America. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 24—A caustic criticism by David Lioyd George that American participation | in the World War was “a fussy mud- dle” drew a sharp challenge today from Gen. Hugh Johnson, who di- rected the American Army's supply and traffic organization. “It is one of the most inexplicable paradoxes of history,” the war-time premier wrote in the fifth volume of his memoirs, published in London today, “that the greatest machine- producing Nation on earth failed to turn out mechanism for war after 18 months of sweating, toiling, hustling.” Johnson retorted that the United Btates achieved “the swiftest and greatest mobilization of force by any nation or combination of nations in | into their divisions, to fight in their uniforms and under their colors. “Gen. Pershing, with the constant knowledge and approval of President Wilson, insisted on carrying out his orders, and while at every crisis he relaxed this policy, as was superbly acknowledged by Gen. Foch (comman- der in chief of the allied armies), he did insist on the formation of Amer- ican divisions, army corps and a fleld army.” VIRGINIAN’S DEATH LAID TO ACCIDENTAL FALL Coroner Probes Fatal Injury to Laundry Manager at Marion Manufacturer's Home.
