NEW YORK, September 24.—Bank clearings in the United States for the latest period fell below the high total in the week preceding. The amount reported to Dun & Bradstreet for the week ended Sep- tember 23 was $5,305,774,000, against $5,040,128,000 for the similar period in 1935, a gain of 5.3 per cent. New York City settlements dropped to $3,189,792,000, a decline of 20 per cent in comparison with the $3,253, 871,000 recorded a year ago. The ag- gregate at outside centers was $2,115.- 982,000, a percentage gain of 18.5 over the $1,786,257,000 in the correspond- ing 1935 week. Individual cities which contributed largely to this increase were Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincine nati, Baltimore, Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, St. Louis, Louisville, Kansas City and Portland, Oreg. Five of these cities, Baltimore, Detroit, Dallas, Kansas City and Port- land, Oreg., exceeded even last week's high totals.
