H ELP AND SITUATIONS. DAILY SHORT STO .GOOD NEIGHBQR By Jack Lamport, ONA HALE hurried with her packing. Every few minutes she would go to the door of the bed Toom to see if little Barbara Ann was still asleep, then she would return to her packing. She would not need much, just an overnight bag and two or three dress- es. Buddenly the door bell rang— three short, dis- turbing rings. “Oh, darn—" Mona swallowed the oath in her an- noyance. She paused in her packing and stood stock still. Why answer the door at & time like this? It could not be any one of importance. There was a dead silence for a few seconds, then that short, irritating ring came again. Mona remembered Barbara Ann. If this ringing kept up the child would surely be awakened. Bhe took three short, swiftly silent steps to the door. “Good afternoon, Mrs. Hale” It/ ‘was Mrs. Moran from next door. 1 “Barbara Ann,” cautioned Mona, | with her forefinger held against her | quivering lips. “To be sure” said Mrs. Moran. | “The little darling must be taking | her nap.” “Is there anything I can do for you?” Mona asked in a hoarse whisper. | RS. MORAN walked over to the | big chair and Mona fidgeted while the older lady slowly and care- | fully eased her rather bulky figure | into the soft upholstery. Finally she seemed settled and Mona spoke. “And now, Mrs. Moran?" “Well, and I see that you are pack- ing to go away.” The sharp, clear ! blue eyes had already swept over the | large room, taking in the almost full satchel on the divan. “Yes, I—I was planning, that is, I m planning to leave Georgetown for 8 few days. As a matter of fact I must hurry and finish my packing in | order to make the train.” “Go right ahead don't fret your- self about me. I'll just sit and chat while you finish getting all your things in that bag.” Mona returned to her packing, glanciug at the clock every few min utes.. The presence of the other woman disturbed her. Now she was speaking. “You know, Mrs. Hale, I did not live in the city all my life, and I like to feel that the people in a city like this should be more neighborly. Now, take us, for instance, living right next door—" WAs the woman going to talk for- ever? Mona wondered. Mrs. Moran rambled on. “Of course, I know how busy you must be with the house and the| baby and then fixing supper for your fine husband. Oh, meaning no offense. What does Mr. Hale work at?” “Oh, Mr. Hale.” Mona turned her face away. “Why, he just works in an office downtown.” “Ah, such a fine looking young | fellow,” Mrs. Moran mused. “What & proud husband he must be of such | s pretty wife, and her the mother | of such & lovely child.” The telephone rang. Mona was over | ¢o it in one quick step. She. muffied her voice as she spoke tersely into the mouthpiece. “Yes—yes, of course, I am almost teady. At 5:30. Good-by, John.” Mona caught herself with a short gasp. She wondered if Mrs. Moran had ever noticed that the name card | in the mail box read Allan Hale. Mona turned slowly, but Mrs. Moran's face had not changed, the placid HELP—MEN. Took a framed picture out. | Barbara Ann's portrait at ing,” Mrs. Moran’ continued just as though the tele- phone call had not Interrupted their one-gided conver- sation, “you are a lucky woman hav= ing & husband like Mr. Hale. It isn't every- young wife this fine apartment and have your pretty clothes, and him such a fine father, too. LRrE ONA could stand this eulogy of the man she was running away from no longer. In despair she said, “Mrs. Moran, are you sure that there jsn't something you want to borrow—some potatoes, perhaps or some sugar?” “Oh, no, thank you, Mrs. Hale. I just thought I would drop in for & neighborly little talk. I get lonesome sometimes, since my man died. Of course, there are the boys, but they are grown up now, working all day and going out at night.” Mona locked her suit case and went to close her small bag. Mrs. Moran rose out of her chair at an amazing speed for a woman of her age and size. She put her hand in the bag and took a framed picture out. “For how long did you say you were going to be gone, Mrs, Hale?” | she asked. “Why for—for just a few days, for just the week end,” Mona faltered. “And you aren't taking the lttle darling with you—and Mr. Hale?” said Mrs. Moran as she surveyed arm's length. “No, you see Mr. Hale isn't going | With me, either. I just want a short |rest away from the cares of the house.” Mona glanced frantically at the clock. It was nearly 5. Would the woman ever leave? MH.S. MORAN walked slowly to the door. “Well, Mrs. Hale, I wish you a pledsant week end. Take care of yourself, though. Your fine hus- band would miss you sorely, and your little girl needs her mother.” Mrs. Moran was closing the door behind her. Mona was shaking with relief when the door opened “sud- | denly. “I'm so sorry, Mrs. Hale, here I was walking out With this picture of your lovely little girl. Isn't that Just like me?” Mona could stand this no longer. She sank down into the big chair | with short sobs. Mrs. Moran said nothing. The telephone rang again. Mona choked back her tears and went to the phone. “Hello—oh, Allan. No, no, I'm all right—just some onions I was peel- ing. You'll be home early tonight 50 we can take in a show? That's—that's lovely, Allan. Will I be waiting for you? Why, of course, dear—I'll always be waiting for you.” She placed the receiver back on the hook and lowering her head on her arms she wept almost happily. Mrs, Moran slowly smiled, then tip- h;ued out, closing the door after | T. After a few moments Mona rose, looked in again at sleeping Bar- {bara Ann, then walked over to the With tears still clogging her | dqor. voice, she whispered: “Bless you, Mrs. Moran, bless you for being just neighborly.” (Copyright, 1936,) HELP—MEN. ‘ACCOUNTANT, student. with knowledge of shorthand and ‘typewriting.
