WORLD-CIRCLING DASHIS PLANNED Reporter Will Attempt New ' Record by Commercial Transportation. @peelal Dispateh to The Star. INEW YORK, September 24 (N.AN.A) —The first complete test of the twentieth century's earth- eriveloping modes of commercial transportation will be begun-next week by Leo Kieran for the New York Times and the associated newapapers of the North American Newspaper Alllance. Mr. Kieran is & reporter on the ‘staff of the Times. All previous ‘round-the-world trips made for speed records have used regular -commercial means of trans- portation only where nothing faster was available. Despite the fact that Mr. Kieran will adhere to the modes of travel available to all tourists, he expects to shorten the best existing time of 23 days, 15 hours, 21 minutes and 3 seconds made in 1928 by John H. Mears and Capt. C. B. D. Collyer. Mr. Mears and Capt. Collyer made all their overland hops by private plane, shipping their plane across the Atlantic and the Pacific. Starts Next Wednesday. Starting from Times Square, New York, at 8 o'clock next Wednesday evening, Mr. Kieran will attempt to discover how long it would take for a commercial traveler, in an enormous hurry, using every available resource | and willing to spend $3,000, to girdle the globe. He will fly by dirigible Im airplane, speed over land in taxi- and trains and make one journey by ship. He expects to be back in Thmes Square the morning of October 21, 20'; days after his start. He will bring back with him, he said, the facts on just how much space modern inventions have devoured and just hpw much the world has been nar- rowed since “as short a time ago as 1933.” +“In 1933," he said. “this trip would not have been possible, since many of the places over which I shall pass md no commercial transportation then. Even today the trip is not pos- sfble in so short a time as I expect to accomplish it. Wednesday evening 1§ the earliest I can begin it because rggular commercial air service from Manila to San Francisco will not start until October 16. This is not only the first trip of its kind ever made around the world and therefore record- establishing, but it is being made on the first day that it becomes pos- afble.” Not to Follow Short Route. ~Mr. Kieran pointed out that most previous globe-girdlers have sought the shortest way around and have chosen & course “somewhere around the fértieth parallel,” which gave them a jéurney of some 15,000 miles. His cburse, dictated by existing modes of travel, will take him around the tenth parallel for a 22,000-mile journey over 16 nations or provinces. r“There are other reasons prevente ing us from finding any existing rec- okd to shoot at. Phineas Fogg, the Jules Verne hero who went around in 80 days, used commercial transpor- tation, but he had camels going 25 miles an hour and had to hire a spe- cial train once to e connections. »“All the others, from Nelly Bly, who went around in 70 days in 1889, to Edward S. Evans and Linton Wells, ‘who made the trip in 28 days in 1926, a}l chartered special conveyances at ope time or other. Mr. Mears and Capt. Collyer, of course, took along their own special conveyance, as did Wiley Post, who flew around the earth in 7 days 18 hours and 49}z minutes lr} 1933.” Mr. Kieran will be clocked out of Times Square, eastbound, and clocked 1A westbound by the National Aero- nhutic Association. Will Fly en Hindenburg. »+He will fly across the Atlantic on the Hindenburg, catch a connecting plane to Rome at Frankfort, go by tzain to Brindisi and then fly through to Hongkong. Stops along the way will be made at Alexandria, Bagdad, Sharjah, Jodhpur, Calcutta, Bang- kok and Penang. Travel will be by daylight, which will give him ample opportunity to make up time lost through bad weather. The only extraordinary concession Mr. Kieran will make in the interests of speed is his baggage. He will buy fresh linen en route and will take with him only a small handbag containing | Capital Man Member of Executive a tooth brush, a comb and a letter from Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia and Controller Frank Taylor of New York inviting Mayor A. J. Rossi of San Francisco to the New York World's Fair in 1939. SAN FRANCISCO, September 24— Frank views of two surveys—one on what 7.400 bankers think of‘the public; the other on what 50,000 sample citizens think of the bankers—were made public today at the American Bankers' Association Convention. Clarence Prancis of New York, presi- dent of General Foods Corp., conducted the surveys in preparing for his ad- dress in which he asserted banks are failing to assume their full place of economic and moral leadership. He suggested they finance the re- building of the country and lead the way to s higher living standard. The hot gases from the burning fuel pass directly underneath 507 more ‘ceiling” surface in a Crane Boiler than in the average boiler. Further, patented baffles direct the water over the hottest part of the boiler. That’s why a Crane Boiler takes so much more heat out of a given amount of fuel and pours it into the rooms of your home. & And it’s why it burns so much less fuel in order to give you the same heat.
