TUNES RESTRICTED TOLEADING BANDS Lesser Orchestras Turn to 0ld Hits as New Ones Are Cornered. ITH the boards going up for the Winter at the Summer dance spots, the bandsmen are back in New York get- ting into swing for their new radio row commitments and Manhattan night spot engagements. And what with the broadcasters subscribing to the new policy which keeps the best of the tunes in the hands of a few music makers of the air, there’s re- newed activity in Tin Pan Alley, too. ‘The ban on the new tunes has some of the lesser bandsmen in a mad scramble among the musty files of the tunesmiths, dusting off hits of 5 and 10 year vintage. Hence you can get ready for revival of some of the vanished melodies of yesteryear, thanks to the current efforts of the 2d agencies, the orchestra leaders and arrangers now busy putting together some of the less pretentious air shows, I\JEANWHIL!: the top-notch baton- eers will be having the new tunes all to themselves, among them Ray Noble bowing into the rainbow room October 1, in company with Sheila Barnett and her new sketches . . . Shep Fields on that new commercial he launches October 2, with Clark Gable as guest star . . . Paul White- man, who dispels the report he is due to return from Fort Worth by his re- fusal of personal appearance dates in the East , . . Eddie Duchin, due in New York shortly, will settle aown on October 15 for a Broadway run . . . Russ Morgan's outfit will be 1 New York all Winter. Two of the most danceable of the orchestras shatter all radio precedents by electing to tour this late in the season. Glen Gray's Casa Loma outfit heads for Detroit, and Bunny Berrigan's Orchestra, de- parting that Saturday night C. B. 8. spot, heads for a New England taur. WI‘I‘H the eurtain going up on the shows for the new season, glance back a moment over the road radio has traveled in the past six months and give thanks for at least three trends by which the listener reaps benefit these Autumn nights. The current year has seen the development of the vogue for “situation” comedy. And, i occasionally, this type of humor finds the dialer deploring the race of the comedians to the microphone to burlesque the newest development in the news, certainly the listener is also the first to register gratitude, because funny men are depending less and less on gags compiled by Joe Miller. A second chance to register approval is provided by the increase of adult, intelligently produced programs, par- ticularly in the field of music, which, in addition to fine, splendid symphonic concert, series, is also to be augmented by the return of the Library of Con- gress musicales via the Columbia net- work on November 12, resumption of the Curtis Institute of Music pro- grams October 28 and the Cincinnati Conservatory series on October 10. ROADCASTING has also taken another step in the right direction in the matter of advertising plugs. The game of kidding the sponsor grows more popular. And what listener would deny that a commercial blurb is easier to take if the sponsor is willing to let the ad writer put his tongue & bit in cheek when con- cocting copy touting his wares on the air? Jack Benny, Phil Baker and Eddie Cantor were among the first to take some of the solemnity out of the commercials. By now nearly every comedian is following suit, in- eluding Don McNeill, whose new show is amusing enough to keep you at- tentive right through the plugs for tasty, tea time tidbits for dog Fido. Phil Baker, by the way, goes the news-conscious comedians one better this season, adopting a newspaper set- up for his new WABC-C. B. C. show. He'll reappear in the guise of & news- paper editor when he gets back to the kilocycles September 27. Maxine Grey ‘:u do the vocals for the new Baker show, FUTURE VETERANS QUERY CANDIDATES ¥Were You in Favor of Bonus?” Heads List of Questions Mailed to Five. By the Associated Press. PRINCETON, N. J., September 22.— The National Council of the Veterans of Future Wars yesterday mailed out to the five candidates for the presi- dency of the United States a set of seven questions headed by, “Were you in favor of the bonus?” Declaring that the bloc rule of or- ganized minorities is the great threat to the American system of Govern- ment, the letter which accompanied the questionnaire stated: “We cannot regard money-grabbing minorities as anything but a threat to our future security. We are re- solved to throw our strength to those who will stand against that wanton :‘q;nndeflnx of our future opportuni- President Roosevelt, Gov. Alfred M. landon, Norman Thomas, Willlam Lemke and Earl Browder are the five candidates to whom the questionnaire was mailed. The questions asked were: “Were you in favor of the bonus?” “Are you in favor of an increase in pensions for widows and orphans of those veter- ans who died in the War?” “Are you in favor of general dependent and in- dividual pensions for all veterans?” “Are you in favor of veterans’ prefer- ence?” “Are you in favor of the draft in time of war?” “Are you in favor of conscription of capital in time of war?” “Are you in favor of conscrip- tion of labor in time of war?” Trico Vacuum Wipers Sales—Repairs Tuesday, September 22, WRC 950k P.M. 12:20 12:15 5 0 2:45 |The O'Neills WMAL 630k Pepper Young’s Family |Current Problems Forum Perkins Ty (Copyright, 1936) WOL 1,310k AFTERNOON PROGRAMS ‘D. ¢, Eastern Standard Time.
