BITUMINOUS COAL OUTPUT MOUNTS Steady Climb Since June Strains Rail Facilities, Association Finds. Production of bituminous coal in 1936 to date shows marked incrfl.u and has been climbing every week ! since the first of June, and its move- ment is straining railroad facilities in some sections, according to a state- | ment by the National Coal Associa- | | tion in reporting to its membership | its survey of the conditions within the industry. The report suggests further that if | production continues to increase in | response to increased demand. a real shortage of coal cars may be ex- perienced. Industrial stocks of coal and coal | in dealers’ yards were reported to be | subnormal and too low for safety, yet industrial coal prices, the statement. continue excessively low and an advance in prices in the near future is to be looked for. The production of bituminous coal for the week ended September 12 was | reported to total nearly 8,000,000 tons, despite the fact that the Labor day | holiday occurred in that week. Production for the year to date is 27,000,000 tons ahead of the same | period last year. The movement of bituminous coal via the lakes had reached a total to September 13 of 314 Cubi approximately 29,500,000 tons, which | is an all-time record. Industrial stock piles of bituminous coal contained only 24,311,000 tons on August 1, as compared with 32,272,000 tons on the same date a year ago. Latest reports were said to indicate less than 6,000,000 tons in the hands |of retailers throughout the country, | |and the report pointed out that if this tonnage were divided equally be- tween the 40.000 retail coal yards it | would amount to no more than 130 tons in each yard. Commenting upon the situation with respect to the rail movement of coal, the report said: The r#ilroads, while making des- | perate efforts to meet the demands for coal cars in all sections. are find- ing it quite difficult to do this in some localities. Certain types of cars sre not everywhere available in suf- ficient quantities to meet the de- mand. Coal care distribution rules have been put into effect on some lines, which means that mines will receive less than their full car supply. Operators are reporting that some railroads are holding fuel coal in cars instead of unioading and releasing the equipment.” DIVIDENDS ANNOUNCED NEW YORK. DONLEY. | rectal Dispatch to The Sta NEW YORK, September 22.—Trail« ers are going to crash the National | Automobile Show this year, and their | first showing, along with their haugh= | tier but less intriguing “prime move ierl." promises to be somethiing of | & splurge. An entire floor, decorated | to represent a traller camp, will be set aside for the exhibition of the new mobile homes on wheels for mod- | ern nomads. Some 15 trailer manufacturers will tdupl:_v their products, ranging in | price from a few hundred dollars for | a simiple rolling bunk house to a palatial palanquin that nicks the bank roll of the wealthy wanderer to the tune of $20.000, s0 we are told. | Along with the trailers will be shown all the accessories and equipment that | are a part of the lore an the lure of the long highway. « New Industry Climbs. ‘There has as yet been no announce- ment of the names of the exhibitors of factory-made trailers, but those who have been giving the newest ine | fant industry the once over are pretty confident that at least four well-known concerns in the automotive field, which have recently envisioned the promise of the bouncing baby indus- try that is said already to have reached $75,000,000 proportions, wi show their products They are Pierce-Arrow, Hayes Body, Federal Trucks and Mullins. Checker Cab and Fisher Body are mentioned as likely to be exhibitors. And rumor has it that both Chrysler and Gen- eral Motors have something up their sleeves. A survey of the new industry, pub- lished in the September issue of American Business and System. finds that there are 14 trailer makers that have been turning out over 100 trail- month every month since | March of this year. “There are 278 | other companies.” savs the surver, | “making from 1 trailer a vear to 60 a month, some of them outstanding |in custom jobs, others peerles in qulm_v work. still others pre-eminent in craftsmanship, fittings or novelty | of equipment.” Further Gains Foreseen. Among the larger makers are such concerns as the Covered Wagon Cn, Palace Travel Coach Corp. Silver Dome, Inc., the Aladdin Co, the Kauneel Co, Royal-Wilhelm Co, Schelm Bros., Inc, Vagabond Coach Manufacturing Co.. Gilkie Trailers Corp.. Hollywood Trailer Co. and Trotwood Trailers, Inc. timates of | their 1937 sales prospects, made by these companies for the magazine publishing thg survey, indicate an optimistic total of some 92,000 units. As compared with their estimated sales for the full year 1936 their hopes for next year suggest gains ranging from 30 to 400 per cent. But the industry has a backzround | of rapid growth which makes extrava- gant sounding sales predictions seem |less far-fetched. Leaders in the new | industry, which is apparently on the wrgo of going big business, are con- vinced that trailers are more likely | to treble than merely double in num- ber next year. And the well-equipped | concerns with modern methods and efficient sales management are gradu- | ers per “|ally edging the marginal producers | and one-man outfits out of the picture.
