TULSA, Okla., September 22.—The Nation’s production of crude ofl in- creased 16,507 barrels during the week ending September 19 to a total of 3,035,246 barrels daily, the Oil and Gas Journal reported today. Oklahoma showed the largest in- crease, jumping 25,000 barrels daily, 15 & total of 590,450 barrels daily. East Texas showed a decline of 411 barrels daily to a total of 439,187 barrels. In all Texas there was a de- crease of 6,904 barrels daily to a total of 1,151,410 barrels daily. In Louisiana, there was a decrease of 48 barrels daily to a total of 235,832 barrels daily. CHICAGO, September 22.—The best Summer business in more than a decade was reported by piano manu- facturers to the National Piano Manufacturers’ Association. August shipments Wwere 26.89 per cent above last year and 280 per cent above 1932, the association reported. July shipments were 48 per cent greater than 1935 and 451 per cent greater than in 1932. ‘The association reported combined shipments for July and August were 35 per cent above 1935, 130 per cent greater than for the two months in| 1934, and 340 per cent above 1932. NEW YORK, September 22 —Dur- ing the first two weeks of September orders for machinery and machine tools dropped off somewhat in most of the important industrial centers of the country, reports American Ma- chinist. Some correspondents at- tribute the decline to politics, others to the end of the vacation season. Fac- tories are busy with substantial back- logs of orders. Boston reports in the New England territory that business was excellent A sudden drop then is attributed to the uncertainty of the outcome of the Maine election. Word from New York cistributors is to the effect that busi- ness has kept up very well and that the volume is satisfactory in the met- ‘The machine tool business is good in the Philadelphia territory, but the outcome of the R. C. A. Camden strike is that certain products are being moved out of the territory. Pittsburgh correspondents do not believe any seri- ous labor trouble will break out there | until after election. Agitators are ap- parently concentrating on the small plants. The Standard Steel Spring Co. closed as the result of a strike and may not reopen. Inquiries are good, orders fair. In Cleveland business is continued at a satisfactory level and there is every expectation that it will continue s0 for many months. Employment is improving and there is no immediate danger of labor trouble. Detroit reports an increase both in inquiries and in orders caused by a realization on the part of buyers tha | immediate deliveries are out of the| question. Things are quieter in In- ! dianapolis than they have been for | several months, but inquiries are *hkx A—17 WHOLESALE INDEX CLIMBS SLIGHTLY Fertilizer Association Finds Average at 80.5, New Recovery Peak, There was a slight rise in the gene eral level of wholesale commodity prices in the week ended September 19, according to the index compiled by the National Fertilizer Association, This index rose last week to 80.5 per cent of the 1926-1928 average, a new high point for the recovery period, ‘The index was 80.4 in the preceding week, 80.1 a month ago, and 78.1 a year ago. Price changes were relatively small during the week, but the general trend appeared to be upward, with five of the principal group indexes showing small advances and only one register- ing a decline. Price movements of foodstuffs were mixed, as 11 items represented in the foods group advanced in price and 9 declined; increases in such ime portant commodities as milk, flour and beef resulted in a moderate rise in the group index. Farm product prices were generally higher, with rising quotations for grains and live stock more than off- setting & small decline in the price of cotton. ‘The index of textile prices remained unchanged, as the decline in cotton counter-balanced the upward move ment in cotton yarns and semi-fine ished goods and raw silk.
