GERMAN FLYERS ENTERTAINED HERE Pilots of Seaplanes in New York-Azores Route See Officials. Four young German pilots, who have fust flown two 10-ton seaplanes from the Azores to New York, arrived here today for conferences on the proposed trans-Atlantic airmail and passenger service. ‘They were greeted at the Germsa Embassy by Ambassador Hans Luther. After breakfast, beer and 7-inch cigars, the four were whisked off to the State Department for a talk with Assistant Secretary Moore. They were to meet Secretary of Commerce Roper and have lunch with Assistant Secretary Johnson and officials of the Bureau of Air Commerce. A sightseeing trip ‘will complete their one-day stay. ‘The Zephyr, one of the German fiying boats which the visitors piloted 2390 miles across the Atlantic for Deutsche Lufthansa, largest of the Reich’s commercial airlines, flew non- stop from the Azores to Port Wash- ington, N. Y. in 21 hours, .arriving Thursday night. The other plane, the Aeolus, paused at Bermuda, completing the flight to New York Saturday. Both ships are 500-horsepower, Diesel-engined giants, all metal and fueled with oil. They are so heavy they cannot rise from the water under their own power, fully loaded, and must be catapulted from a ‘ship’s deck. The “mother” ship is en route to New York. The flyers said their experimental trip demonstrated the feasibility of a regular trans-Atlantic service, but that there were many difficulties to be surmounted. Their route was more difficult than that from the Azores to South America, over which similar German air boats have plied weekly for about two years. By the Associated Press. High Government financial quarters disclosed today that budget estimates for the next fiscal year probably will call for national defense expenditures topping the billion-dollar mark. ‘This report circulated as Govern- ment departments engaged in a last- minute rush to file estimates for the 1938 fiscal year with Daniel W. Bell, acting director of the Budget Bureau. Deadline for filing estimates for the 12 months, beginning next July 1, was set today, with hearings opening Sep- tember 21. In a call for estimates to the heads of Government departments and agencies, Bell urged that “every pos- sible effort” be made to bring demands for 1938 below appropriations for the current fiscal period. Referring to increased activities in some agencies resulting from new legislation, Bell continued: “It is realized that some activities will need increased appropriations in order to comply with the requirements of the law, but it is hoped that reduc- tions will be made in other expendi- tures which will more than offset the necessary increases, so that in the aggregate your estimates will show a substantial reduction below the 1937 sppropriations.” Officials said, however, that the na- tional defense estimate would rise above the $920,000,000 outlay projected in the current year because more money will be necessary to carry on & program of expansion already under way. The enlarged national defense pro- gram contemplates additional funds in 1938, it was said, because costs for some features already inaugurated will grow heavier. The amount of a possible increase was not estimated, but officials asserted requests for al- lotments probably would go above $1,000,000,000. % Another major factor in next year's budget will be the drought, which will be felt in several different ways. Be- sides the possibility for requests of a long-range drought program, the price of food for Government hospitals, prisons and other institutions may ad- vance, officials asserted.
