POLICE BROADEN GEM THEFT PROBE Doubt, However, Same Thief Robbed Coe and Cox Estates. | "By the Associated Press. GARDEN CITY, N. Y, June 25— Authorities hunting a light-footed burglar who looted the palatial North Shore home of William Robertson Coe ©of $400,000 in jewels and other valu- ables broadened their inquiry today to include a $20,000 burglary that pre- ceded it. A sneak thief who successfully skirt- ed five servants and a bridge party on the lawn of the Hill Neck residence of Mrs. Irving Cox escaped with $20,000 worth of gems belonging to Mrs. Jean- ette Bullock, who with Mrs. Cox was & hostess at the party. That was Tuesday afternoon. Wed- nesday morning Coe, sportsman and capitalist, and his wife awoke to find their bed rooms stripped of valuables, including a pearl necklace valued by Coe at $300.000. The heavily-patroled 700-acre Coe estate is between Oyster Bay and Lo- cus’, Valley. Despite a marked similarity between the two crimes—the apparent knowl- edge of the looter in each case as to| exactly where the valuables were kept | —Police Inspector Harold R. King ex- pressed doubt both were by one man. The Coe burglary, he said, appeared to be the work of a more polished thief. A smudged fmgerprmt found on a closet doorknob offered only a negligi- ble clue to identity of the burglar who entered the Coe house from a porch roof, cutting an opening in a screen door to unlatch it. Plans were made by King to ques- tion about 15 former servants in the Coe household. | THE WEATHER l District of Columbia—Fair tonight and tomorrow: warmer; gentle var- iable winds becoming moderate south- west.
