"A-20 » CLEARINGS SHOW SLIGHT DECLINE Total for 22 Leading Cities Remains Well Above Same 1935 Period. Bv the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 25.—Bank clear- ings in the United States for the week ended Wednesday, June 24, showed a falling off from the total for the week preceding, but continued higher than last year's aggregate. The amount for 22 leading cities, as re- ported to Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., was $5,572,681,000, against $4,997,943,000 for the same week last year, an in- crease of 115 per cent. This con- trasted with a gain of 9.2 per cent in the week previous. At New York City the total of $3,545,158,000 was 7.4 per cent in ex- cess of the 1935 comparative, while the amount for the current period at out- side centers was $2,027,523,000. This ‘was 19.6 per cent over the amount for the similar period of 1935. The total for the last week dropped $867,050,000 below the figure of the week preceding. For the two cor- responding periods last year a loss of $901,559,000 was recorded. Gains were reported for all cities with the exception of Philadelphia. The greatest rises were noted at At- lanta, Dallas, New Orleans, Baltimore, Cleveland, Boston, Minneapolis, Cin- cinnati and Pittsburgh. PARIS, June 25—The Bank of Prance reduced its discount rate again today for the second time in a week. The rate was cut to 4 per cent from 5 per cent. The 5 per cent rate was reached Tuesday when the bank’s board of regents, at an extraordinary session, lowered the figure from the 6 per cent to which it previously had been raised to halt the wholesale withdrawals of the gold reserve. Seek to Loosen Credit. Both cuts were understood to be in line with the policy of Premier Leon Blum's government to loosen credit facilities and put more currency into circulation through productive enter- prises. The bank also lowered the rate on loans covered by securities to 5 per cent from 6 per cent.
