EARNINGS LOWER May Net Totals $124,014, Compared to $150,323 in 1935 Month. BY EDWARD C. STONE. The monthly report of the Wash- ington Gas Light Co.. filed witn the Public Utilities Commission today, shows net operating revenue for the month of May, 1936, of $124,014, com- pared with $150,323 for May of last year, a decrease of $26,309. Operating revenue for May, 1936, $524,928, compares with $535462 for May a year ago, a decrease of $10.534. Operating expenses, including taxes and uncollectible bills, increased $1 775, this year's figure being $400,914, against $385,139 in May, 1935. Non-operating revenues for May this year increased $5.988 over last year's figure of $11,726 to 817,714, resulting in a gross corporate income of $141,728, which compares with $162.049 for May, 1935, or a decrease of $20,321. Interest deductions of $76.086 for May, 1936, were $3.996 more than last year’s figure of $72,090, resulting in a mt income of $65.642 this year, compared with $89,959 last year. In the first five months of the pres- ent year operating revenues showed a gain of $236449. At the same time operating expenses incre: by $280.901. This was felt in the net income, which, after all deducticns, amounted to $622,735, against $676,- 615 a year ago, or a decrease so far this year of $53,880. Georgetown May Net Lower. The monthly report of the George- town Gas Light Co., also filed with the Public Utilities Commission todey, shows & net loss of $6,155 for the month of May, 1936, as compared | with an income of $3,425 for May of last year. Operating revenues in May this year were $95,326, as against $105,- 865 for May, 1935, a decrease of $10,- 539. Operating expenses, including taxes and uncollectable bills, decreased $1.630, this year's figure being $96,- 380, against $98,010 for May, 1935. Non-operating income being ap- proximately the same as last year, the loss before interest deductions was $1.054, compared with an income of $7.856 for May, 1935. Interest de- ductions increased $670, this year's figure being $5.101, against $4,431 for May, 1935, The Georgetown Gas Co. in the first five months of 1936 kept the in- crease in operating expenses below the gain in operating revenues, in that way keeping net revenues ahead of last year. Net income stood at $30,- 286, against $24.865 a year ago, an increase of $5,421. Collections Lag in District. Bills in Washington department | stores were paid somewhat slower in| May than in some of the other cities | in the fifth reserve district, the Bank | of Richmond stated today. The per- | centage of receivables on May 1 which | were collected during the month was 26.6, against 33.8 per cent in Rich-| mond, 29 per cent in Baltimore and | 28.3 per cent for the whole district. | As previously stated, retail trade in | Washington was 13.2 per cent better | than in May, 1935, and up 12.2 per cent in the first five months of this year over the like period a year ago. Stocks of goods on hand in the stores here were 6.7 per cent higher than at | the same time last year, but about 4 per cent lower than in the previous month this year. Stocks of goods in Washington Etores were turned 1.819 times in the first five months of this year, a better» record than was hung up in Balti- | more or in Richmond. The average | for the whole district was 1.661 times, | the Richmongd Reserve Bank reports. Underwriters Award Honors. The District Underwriters’ Associa- tion held the last meeting of the fiscal | year at the Willard Hotel last night| when the retiring president, J. E. McCombs, turned over the gavel to the new chief, Laurance H. Riggles. ©O. Sam Cummings, secretary of the national association, was the guest speaker and there was a musical pro- gram arranged by Charles I. Hay- ing of sterling silver vases for life insurance week activi- ties were awarded to Roy B. Lan- ham, Equitable of New York; Ralph Cipriano, New York Life; Armand Du- rant, Connecticut General Life; Da- vid M. Crouch, Acacia Mutual, and the Northwest Mutual Agency, A. L. Baldwin, general agent. Framed certificates were presented to 11 100 per cent membership agency organizations: Berkshire Life, Con- necticut General, Connecticut Mutual, Guardian Life, Minnesota Mutual, Mu- tual Benefit of Newark, National Life of Vermont, New England Mutual, Pacific Mutual, Phoenix Mutual and State Mutual by Winthrop G. Batch- elder, chairman of the Membership Committee, who also announced an 86 per cent increase in membership dur- ing the year by 136 new members. Charles W. O'Donnell, the treasurer, Teported a substantial increase in the assets of the association. It has been anticipated that the total amount of insurance written in Washington dur- ing Insurance week would be an- nounced, but the figures were not reported, the association adjourning to & bLuffet supper. Lincoln Corp. Votes Dividends. At a meeting of the Board of Direc- tors of the Lincoln Service Corp., held yesterday, the regular quarterly divi- dend of 134 per cent on the preferred stock of the corporation was declared, payable August 1, to stockholders of record June 30. The directors also declared a dividend distribution of 25 cents per share on the common stock to stockholders of record June 30, pay- able August 1, Charles Delmar, presi- dent, announced today. Mergenthaler Linotype was strong on the Washington Stock Exchange again today, climbing to 46 on & 15- share turnover. Thirty shares of American Security & Trust Co. stock moved at 258. ‘Washington Railway & Electric pre- ferred sold at 110! on transfers totaling 79 shares. . A single share of Lanston Monotype commanded 83 and Potomac Electric Power 6 per cent preferred moved at 110. In the bond division Capital Trac- tion 5s figured in three $1,000 sales at 91%. ‘The market closed with 23 shares ofyclpunl Transit stock selling at 14%. LOCOMOTIVES NEEDED. NEW YORK, June 25 (#).—Locomo- tive building circles are said to be expecting contracts for a sizable num- ber of engines in the last half of the year.
