LEGEND REVIVED BY GASPE WINDS Cries of Maiden Left to Die on Reef for Love Are Heard. GASPE, June 20—Gaspe, both the | Peninsula and the town, have added considerably to their historical interest since their discovery by Jacques Cartier in 1534, but there is one story that always proves interesting to the visitor from the United States— the story of the castaway maiden who ‘was left to perish on a lonely rock in the open sea. As the land-winds whistle down from the cliffs near the headland of Caplan, the fishermen claim they still hear the cries and moans of Mar- guerite, a maiden of noble lineage, who- was castaway on a reef some distance off shore in the year 1542— because of a mistake in love. The young castaway was a passen- ger on a ship carrying settlers from France to the newly-discovered Gaspe. She was the niece of the captain, a man of stern and rigorous principles, and for the time her guardian. The voyage in sail was a long one, allowing plenty of time for the pas- séngers to get intimately acquainted. Markuerite feel in love with a young Norman, Gailliard by name. The captain was asked to perform & marriage ceremony for them, but instead he reviled theeyoung woman for seeking a mate among what he termed “the common people.” He for- bade the marriage, and when Mar- guerite avowed she would marry the young Norman as soon as the ship reached the shore, the captain became #0 furious that he lost all sense of sympathy and righteousness. Steering his ship straight for a reef, the captain swung alongside and there disembarked Marguerite and her | love, and then set off to sea. After the ship had disappeared, the young man, on what was little more than a rock in the sea, gathered bits of driftwood to make a rude raft, and on this he set off for the mainland, promising to obtain help to xescuei Marguerite. He was soon swallowed | THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. BIARRITZ, June 20.—On the tour- ist's itinerary from Italy to Cher- bourg, or from the channel port cross-country, Biarritz is one of the show places of Basque, France. It is situated on the Bay of Biscay with the picturesque background of hills and dales, gardens, orchgrds and vine- yards and is an ideal spot for rest and recreation. It is during the months of July, August and September that this part of France offers every facility of a sea-bathing resort together with the full bloom of the flower and fruit sea- son for which the counmtryside is fa- mous. Possibly no part of France com- bines such contrasts of the ultra-mod- ern life and the extreme quaints as Biarritz and its environs. From palatial hotels, provided with every comfort, one steps into the France of Queen FElizabeth and Catherine de Medicis’ time. Mingling with the gay influx of Summer visitors, one sees the brightly embroidered dress of the Basque women, whose picturesque costume and head-dress seem almost theatri- cal in the modern eclipse of present- day fashions. The men, undaunted in the atmosphere of France's famous watering-place, dress in the black satin breeches and gloriously - em- broidered waist-coats that were the fashion in the time of Charles IX.
