By the Associated Press. HICAGO, June 20.—Showing a fine burst of speed as the field headed into the stretch, Hol- | lyrood, the speedy thorough- | bred from Hal Price Headley's stable, captured the $15.000 added Chicago Derby before 20,000 spectators at | Hawthorne today | Second choice to A. G. Tarn’s Rush- away in the betting, the Headley colt, | with Jockey Willie Saunders up, won the mile and one-quarter feature by three-quarters of a length from Car- | vola, owned by E. K. Bryson of Balti- | more. Holl Image, from the Superior | Stable, and only Chicago-owned hors | in the stake, trailed Carvola by a neck | for third money. \(ahlemale Paces Winner. HE net value of the winner was $13.000. the race grossing $18.520. | Second money was $3,000, third $1,500 and fourth $750, taken down by Do- ran, owned by A. Pelleteri of New Or- leans. Sparta, the winner's running mate, ret the early pace and the stage for its more illustrious stablemate. Doran held second place with Hollyrood third most of the way around and within a | quarter of a mile from the finish the | jockey who piloted Omaha to victory in the Kentucky Derby last \Pnr‘ quickly shot his mount out in front, catching Sparta and Doran without | much trouble. Carvola finished fast for second and Holl Image came from well back to grab show money. Favorite Runs Seventh, | USHAWAY, nner of the Louisi- ana, Illino] Latonia Derbies, and favorite at 9 to 5, finished seventh and clearly not good enough to- day The Headley star ran the distance in 2:05. 1 second off the derby record made by Caractus in 1925, but far off the 2:013; track record set by the great Sun Beau. Ti2 filly CASH BOOK was sent to the post as a good thing in her race the other cay, and after being installed the favorite be- cause of a last minute play, Jockey R. Kastner gummed’up the works by getting off so pooriy that she was practically eliminated. LADY CARROT, a long shot, has worked cleverly for this and may defeat PRINCE DANNY, a recent winner over the same kind he mezts in here. SECOND RACE — SPITTENIM- AGE, JACKSNIPE, SWA SPITTENIMAGE, whica has been campaigned in New York recently, makes his first start of the New England season Monday and we belicve he will show his heels all the way. JACKSNIPE re- tired after going 6 furlongs in his last. The shorter distance may bring out his best. SWAP figures clesely. THIRD RACE—SPRINGS HERE, TINTORETTO, Q FULL. SPRINGS HERE, a youngster that has finished second in the only two starts of his career, comes up as the prcbable winner of the third. He made his first start at Agawam and Thursday he moved over to Suffolk, where he placed to Baron n. TINTORETTO has teen 1acing fairly well and may hold QUEEN FULL safe. FOURTH R\CE Bll E DAY, GOLDEN SWEEP, DEAN SWIFT. Well, well, well! If it isn't cur old friend BLUE DAY again. He has won five straight times for us and continues to improve des; ite many years of racing. He ias another stiff tussle on his han's Monday. GOLDEN WAY. on la year's form, figuies on top, but w« prefer to see him run once. DEAN SWIF‘I‘ may benl lhe others. i sprints, BONY LADY.) FIFTH RACE—EBONY MISS CAREFUL, NGEL. EBONY LADY, a consistent mare that raced on the co=st be- fore arriving in New England, made her secsons] bow in the East Tuec- a 6-furlong race and it wis qm(e impressive. Moves up to a longer distance Monday and we believe she’ll win easily. MISS CAREFUL, a victor by six lengths in her last, may offer the conten= tion and beat SWAMP ANGEL. LADY, SwWAmMP SIXTH RACE—MY KIN, MASKED GAL, JUBILEE JIM. MY KIN showed a briliiant race the other day, considering it was her first start since last year. She flashed to the front of a good band of sprinters and didn't tire until the final sixteenth, when Lieut, Greenock and Keokee passed her, MASKED GAL didn't like the heavy track in her last and can do better. JUBILEE JIM figures next in line. SEVENTH RACE—EL PUMA, MY PURCHASE, WANDRELL. A huge shift in the weights give EL PUMA a decided margin over MY PURCHASE, a veteran that beat him the other day. In a mile and one-sixteenth race EL PUMA carried 113 pounds and MY PUR- CHASE 104. Tomoitow, with the distance more in EL PUMA'S favor, there is a 7-pound shift in the weights, WANDREL may take third money. SANDY ROY, MISS JO DULATE. A mile and seveniy jaids iS & bit further than SANDY cares to carry his best speed, but he out- claszes this bunch and we are giwving him the preference. MISS JONES, ancther that is best in may hold UNDULATE EIGHTH RA! s safe. ARFLANE TAKES SUFFOLK FEATURE * Verdict Never Is in Doubt in Mayflower as Track Record Is Set. Ex the Associcted Press. OSTO! June 20 —Airflame, Alfred G. Vanderbilt's 2-year- old, scored his sixth victory today in seven starts in the Mayflower, $2.500 added feature of the week end program at Suffolk Downs. His mutuel. Close to 30.000 fans roared acclaim as the son of Ariel-Flamante set a track record of 0:59.2 for the 5 fur- longs while easing up at the end. With Jockey Renick maintaining & snug hold on his charge from the stretch turn home, the verdict was never in doubt. Maemere Farm's fast-charging Rockwood was three lengths back of the winner and a length in front of Cary Grayson's third-piace Yodel that held that spot by a length and a half over the other Maemere Furm's entry, Maedic. Holders of tickets on the Maemere entry got back $2.80 for place, while Yodel returned $3 to show. Airflame leaped out of the gate to a length and a half lead and the Vanderbilt juvenile spun the first quarter in 0:224 and the half in 0:45.2. ‘ Calumet Farm's Talked About, ex- | pected to furnish strong contention to the winner, never was in the run- ning after the dash to the first turn. EW YORK, June 20.—Mr. Bones had no Granville with which to contend today, with the result it was an easy matter for the John Hay Whitney representative to win the forty-eighth Dwyer Stakes from five lesser lights of the 3-year-old division at Aque- duct. Favorite at 7 to 10 on the strength cf his photo-finish defeat by Gran- ville in the Belmont Stakes, the brown son of Royal Minstrel never was menaced seriously throughout the mile and an eighth. He set the pace and at the end held a length-and half margin over H. W. Sage's Pull- man, & 10-to-1 shot. Mrs. Payne Whitney's sluggishly starting Memory Book was a like distance to the rear to take third | money in front of Excite, Canach and Jean Bart. which finis} in that order. The victory, marking third in six starts this | year, was worth $8,500 to the colt's | owner. Gilbert Rides Winner. FOR about five furlongs, Mr. Bones and Jean Bart staged a repeti- tion of their duel during the early Jean, & son of Man o' War, found the pace too swift, however, and rapidly drop- | ped back as Pullman took up the | futile chase.
