FINANCIAL IN BANK ASSETS B,409 National Institutions Report Increase of $1,369,665,000. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Controller of the Currency J. F. T. ©'Connor reported today that 5409 national banks in the United States and its insular possessions showed an increase of $1,369.665,000 in total assets on the call date of November 1 and the last previous call on June 29. The same banks increased 'their holding of Government securities by $1,145,364,000, Controller O’'Connor said. Loans and discounts during the same period decreased $322.000,f 000. Total deposits of the banks on No- Yember 1 were $24,033,236,000, an in- crease of $1,514.990,000, or 6. 73 per cent, since June 29, and an increase of £3.211,844,000, or 15.43 per cent, since October 17, 1934. The percentage of loans and dis- feounts to total deposits on November 1 was 30.38 compared with 32.71 on June £9 and 36.66 on October 17, 1934. Seaboard Offering Out Today. TInitial public financing for Seaboard Finance Corp., operating a system of nine personal loan offices in Virginia and Tennessee, in the form of new {ssues of 30,000 shares of $2 cumulative preferred stock, with warrants, and 22,500 shares of common stock is being made by Leach Bros., Inc., and James M. Johnston & Co., Washington. The stock is being offered, by means of a prospectus, at $28.50 per share for the preferred and $7.50 per share for the common stock. Each share of preferred stock will carry a warrant entitling the holder to subscribe for one share of common stock on the following basis: $7 per share on or before December 31, 1936; $8.50 per share between January 1, 1937, and Pecember 31, 1938, and $10 per share from January 1, 1939, to December 31, 3940, when the warrants expire. New Check Record Forecast. The general trend of debits to in- dividual bank accounts, sometimes re- ferred to as checks cashed, has been upward since the bank panic early in 1933 when the low for the depres- gion was reached, according to the Alexander Hamilton Institute. Although debits in November were slightly below the peak of the move- ment reached in October they were 612 per cent above the depression’s low and 25.4 per cent higher than a year ago. The prospect is that a new high peak will be reached in Decem- ber. The increase ia bank debits, however, has been partly a reflection of a rising price trend. When allowance is made for the rise in price, bank debits still indicate, however, that the gain in business has been substantial. The index of the purchasing power of checks cashed was 30.1 per cent higher in November than a. the low for the depression. There is still a wide margin between the present level and full recovery. The purchasing power index in No- vember was 28.2 per cent lower than the 1929 average. Safe Deposit Meeting Soon. The safe deposit section of the Dis. trict Bankers’ Association will hold the regular December meeting next Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock in the board room of the American Security & Trust Co. All banks that have not sgent delegates to other meetings are urged to be represented at the com- Ing gession, as it is expected to be of more than ordinary importance. ‘Washington banks appeared in gala Christmas attire this morning, the | yuletide decorations having been | brought out Saturday afternoon after closing time. The lobbies were most | mttractive, most of the banks having | one good-sized tree and some of them more. Bankers and a good many olher\ citizens received special letters today from Secretary Morgenthau, calling mttention to the United States baby bonds for investment purposes. “In- | creasingly large numbers of persons | mre buying United States savings bonds regularly,” the announcement | stated. In order to simplify their purchase the Treasury has devised a glirect mail order blank. Fleming Names Comumittees. Robert V. Fleming, president of the Wmerican Bankers' Association, today Bnnounced the complete committee Bo arrange for the Eastern Conference pn Banking Service, to be held in Philadelphia January 23 and 24. As| Blready stated, Harry J. Haas, former president of the A. B. A, is general chairman. ‘The general topic of the conference will embrace managerial, legislative end operative problems confronted by &l classes of banks and will be held in addition to the established trust and savings conferences regularly con- ducted under the auspices of the asso- ciation. An outstanding phase of the meetings will be the development of plans for promoting a general better public understanding in regard to the functions and policies of banks. Bankers will participate in the con- ference from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Dela- ware, Virginia, West Virginia end the District of Columbia.
