THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. MONDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1935. AMERICA WARNED AGAINST FASCISM Dr. Salvemini Tells Town Ha!l Forces Leading to Dic- tatorship Are Present. Forces similar to those which brought Fascism in Italy are likely to bring it to the United States, Dr. Gaetano Salvemini told a Town Hall sudience last night in warning Amer- ica to take care not to fall into the evil of dictatorship. Big business interests gave Musso- lini the financial power necessary to effect his coup d'etat in 1922, while the lower middle class provided the manpower, and discharged army offi- cers furnished the leadership, he declu‘ed “There are the same enemies of | democracy in America as in Italy,” he | warned. Readily admitting the faults in democracy, the speaker, who once was imprisoned by Il Duce for his anti- Fascist views, asserted the evils of dictatorship are even greater, and that if this country should choose a dicta~ torial regime as an alternative for an inefficient democracy, it might. find that it had jumped from the frying pan into the fire. * Leads to Degradation. Dictatorship leads to the intellec- tusl and moral degradation of the people, he declared, attributing its success to “the mob’s dislike for hav- ing to think and its preference for being bullied.” Dr. Salvemini, differentiating com: munism from fascism and nazi- ism, drew rounds of applause with his as- sertion that communism is less dan- gerous than the other two. A free press is neoessary to the| maintenance of democracy, he warned, although the centralization of the eontrol of editorial opinion is the first step on the road to fascism, for it creates that standardization of thought whieh is a prerequisite for a dictatorial ERNEST C. Tillema, professor of comparative government at George Washington University, whether there was not large popular support for Mussolini in Italy, Dr. Salvemini cited vital statis- tics and made a comparison with Nazi Germany. “After Hitler in 1933 called upon German women to bear more children for him, the birth rate in Germany increased 500,000 in 1934,” he declared. *“But in Italy there is a general strike | on. When in 1927 Mussolini com- | manded Ttalian women to supply him | with more children, within nine months the birth rate dropped precipi- tately, and in 1934 the birth rate was 100,000 lower than in 1927.” The Ethiopian war was discussed briefly. The speaker said the African campaign was not the product of true Ttaian needs, but a means of enhanc- ing the personal prestige of I1 Duce. “If there are mines of gold or any other resources in Ethiopia, the British would have exploited them long ago,” he asser Called “Dr. Mussolini.” LIBERTY CREAMS employed will work an eight-hour| day and a five-day week.
