/ SPORTS NavyYardMakesRecordDuckpinEntry COLUMBIA LODGE IN STAR TOURNEY L) Entire Roster of 34 Teams Will Shoot Tomorrow at Lucky Strike. BY ROD THOMAS. HE largest single group of bowl- ers ever to compete in The Evening Star tournament, all representing the Columbia Lodge, No. 174, I. A. M., most of them navy yard machinists, will blast away tomorrow night in the Lucky Strike preliminary. It will be a free party for the 170- odd members of the 34-team league, whose bowling will be paid for by the Bacas brothers, operators of several restaurants. Most of the machinists will receive fat handicaps, but at least one among them, a decade or so back, would have wanted none. We refer to the league’s president, Joe Fowler, who at one time was an invariable choice when all-star teams were formed and a unanimous one when such a team was to repre- sent the navy yard district. Fowler still can pot the headpin with regu- larity. Big Business for Somebody. 'OWLER and livewire Jack O'Con- nell, who has uncled the league from its inception, engineered the ma- chinists into The Star tournament and gave the Lucky Strike a tremen- dous boost in its campaign to land the roll-off, in which the bulk of the $500 prize fund will be distributed. Com- peting with the Lucky Strike for the hig chunk of extra business are the Arcadia, Columbia and Convention Hall, the award to be made by a vote of the tournament participants. ‘Twenty-five pergent of those who shoot the five-game qualifying round will engage in the roll-off, with the cost of their second sets paid for by the alleys they represent. Thus, if 2,000 men and women compete 1n the quali- fying round, the establishment that gains the roll-off will acquire cool smackers in extfa business plus a siz- able pick-up in practice games and*a ‘whopping boost in prestige. And this year, with all four of the | major establishments running at full tilt, the contest for the roll-off prom- ises to be a humdinger. It was won last year by the Lucky Strike. Each entrant is asked to cast a bal- Iot, no matter at what alley he or she shoots the qualifying set, and it may be that the issue will be decided by the votes from the smaller plants. If the “little men” of the bowling busi- ness ganged up in favor of one of the big plants that plant assuredly would grab the gravy. Heretofore, however, the minor ballot has been well dis- tributed. Entry List Zooms. Wl'rfl numerous leagues adding two games to their regularly | Ea scheduled sets and not a few shooting double-headers to make up the quali- fying test, the tournament entry is growing in leaps and the goal of 2,000 mppears likely to be achieved. George L. Isemann, secretary of the National Duckpin Bowling Congress, who covers the fleld from New Eng- land to Georgia in his duckpin pro- motion activities, said today he knew of no tournament in the country with as much appeal as The Star's, which costs the participant nothing except the alley fee for five games. “And you won't find many, if any. in which the interest is so high,” Ise- mann added. ‘The bowlers have from now until December 29 to roll their qualifying sets, which may be shot at any estab- lishment in Washington and nearby Maryland and Virginia. Entry blanks are available at all. e TALK COURT TACTICS Coaches Agree That Man-to-Man Defense Is Most Effective. Man-to-man defense is considered the best protection against field goals by two of Washington's collegiate court coaches, it was revealed by their remarks before the third session of the National Capital Basket Ball Clinic last night at the Y. M. C. A. gym. Both Freddy Mesmer, of George- town, and Walter Young, of Ameri- can University, discussed zone defense formations but agreed that individual guarding is more effective, George Hepbrom, secretary of the National Basket Ball Rules Committee, traced the history of the game since its in- ception in 1892, and Dutch Lentz, coach at St. John's College in An- napolis, explained several practical offensive plays. —_— LISTS DISTRICT QUINTS G. The Brewers all but whitewashed the Occidentals in their frst meet- ing a month ago and since then the Lchampion Fred Bucholz team has been watling for a chance to get even. In first place after an uphill fight, the Espet-Newman-Harrison Krauss- Clarke combination have a slight edge over the Megaw-Santini-Litchfield- Clampitt-Blakeney outfit. Another tussle that looms as a sizzler is carded at the Lucky Strike between Grand Central Valet and Arcadia. The Valetmen rolled a record set of 1,909 in trimming Heurich two games last week. Convention Hall bowlers play host to the Lucky Strike sharpshooters as the major circult brings its second series to a close. A?!‘ER many discouraging defeats that dropped them far down in the Ladies’ District League pennant chase, the Swanee bowlers are hold- ing their heads a bit higher today because of a two-game victory over the pacemaking Rosslyn club. Unbeaten practically all the season, the Virginians were fairly smothered in the first and last tilts as Swanee chalked up games of 561 and 541. Rolling 542 to 497, Rosslyn won the middle tussle. ‘While Lucille Young, Swanee anchor, and Evelyn Ellis, captain, ] T e, ERSRaan e 0t rcades L Lustine-Nichol'n Chillum 4 Riverdale _ Lanham Brookland C'neil Individual Averages. By the Associated Press, EW YORK, December 12— ‘William Woodward’s Omaha, king of the 1935 3-year-olds, will invade the English turf next year if he has fully recovered from the mysterious ailment that forced his retirement last August. The stretch-running son of Gallant Fox who, like his famous sire, won the Kentucky Derby, Preaknes, Bel- mont Stakes and the Arlington Classic, is doing light work at his owner's Bel Afr Stud, in Maryland. Even to the | expert eye he shows no signs of the ailment that has had his trainer, James Fitzsimmons, and veterinarians guessing since he went lame after win?® ning the classic. Appears to Be Sound. “HE APPEARS perfectly sound,” said Tommy Driscoll, foreman of the stable. “Of course, he is only being galloped, but I intend to bring him back to Aqueduct December 22 and put him in hard training. Capt. C. Boyd-Rochfort, Mr. Woodward's English trainer, will be here to watch the colt and pass on his fitness to race abroad.” Only an extended workout can de- termine whether Omaha is ready to go | after the coveted Ascot Gold Cup, the race in which Mrs. John D. Hertz's Reigh Count finished second in 1929. During the year the chestnut speed- ster piled up earnings of $142,275. He was first in six of his nine starts, fin- ished second back of Rosemont in the Withers Mile and wound up third in | the Wood Memorial and Brooklyn Handicap. The Brooklyn was won in world record time of 1:48ls for 1% | miles by Discovery, with King Saxon | second. — ~HONOR DENNIS INGRAM Alabama Youth Elected Captain of Woodward Prep Quint.
