By the Associated Press. SARASOTA‘ Fla., December 12.— new and controversial angle in golf. As an idea-breeder Gene is as good as he is as a shot- maker on any golf course. Gene's latest helpful hint for golf s couched alopg characteristic lines. “The pros,” Gene says, “are allowing the game to sink to a piker's level along the tournament circuit.” “What we should do.” says the erst- while Connecncut farmer and former | open king, “is to tell the sponsors of open golf (ournnmenhs to increase, not decrease, their prize money, and tell | ’em that whatever they put up we (the pros) will double it. If they put up $5,000, we'll put in $5,000 more. | If they put up $10,000, we'll make it | $20,000. That's the way to put the| game across and lift it to a higher plane in the professional ranks. Look | at the Kentucky Derby. It isn’t the improvement of the breed that brings | thousands of people to Churchill| Downs every May. It isn't anything but the $60,000 purse.” Tough on Little Fellow. *BUT what about the little fellows | who haven't a chance to get in | on the big money?” Gene was asked. “What could be their hope in tossing | 4n all this extra dough and probably getting nothing back?” “That’s an ancient argument with | whiskers,” Gene said. “Sure it would cost them more, but think of the ex- perience they are getting in these big | money tournaments and if the game | were put on a better plane wouldn't they all benefit? A lot of us had to pay for experience before we got any- where. Iknow Idid. And if we raise the general level of professionalism, we'd all be worth more.” Sticking his neck out is a favorite habit with Gene. But the Westchester boy can take it. He took it after his 8-inch cup trial balloon, after his sponsorship of “appearance money” and after many more ventures by him into the speculative fleld of golf. But we imagine Gene's latest idea won't| find much favor with the hard-work- | ing pros who haven't the money Gene 728 13th ST. N.W. 911-15 H ST. N.E. 3113 14th ST. N.N. 923-25 Tth ST. N.W. SO SERIOUS did Ruppert sound to listeners that word was spread through the thinning lobby of the headquarters that Kunnel Jake may make a final and astounding offer of cash and Tony Lazzeri today for Myer, Even some astute base ball men sub- scribed to this theory, partly because Myer is a great ball player and a pro- spective drawing card himself in New York, but chiefly because the Yanks, pennantless since 1932 and outclassed on paper by Boston and Detroit, might do something to add strength and stir up interest. The Alleni-for-Pearson- and-Sundra deal, it was added, hardly was the kind of a transaction calcu- lated to arouse much interest in Gotham. Griffith, however, called it all a joke this morning. “I was only kidding Ruppert,” he vowed, “and Jake was kidding me back. Why we even framed little posters in fun, suggesting adver- tisement campaigns to Ruppert. Called Joke by Griff. "Il' I SOLD Myer the price would have to set a new record. I mean that. We intend to keep Buddy, and if Ruppert offers $250,000 for Myer I won't take it. Of course, if he walks up to me and hands me & check for $500,000 then that's one of those things. “I'd sell any player for half a million dollars. “Seriously, though, it'’s all a joke. ADISON, Wis, December 12— University oei Wisconsin regents entered the university's coaching up- | heaval actively today after an ex- | change of denials and counter denials by principals in the dispute. Harold Wilkie, Board of Regents chairman, invited any one with “spe- cific facts relating to the athletic sit- uation at Wisconsin” to submit them before the regents meet in special ses- sion December 19. The board arranged Tuesday to have a three-man committee of the Athletic Council make an inquiry into charges that Athletic Director Walter Meanwell encouraged a poll of the foot ball team for the removal of Dr. Clarence Spears as foot ball coach. One committeeman publicly stated that allegations against Meanwell ap- peared to be unfounded. Meanwell issued a 2,000-word state- ment, contending his actions were ethical, since he, as athletic director, was responsible for the welfare of the department. Capt.-Elect John Go- lemgeske, who said he polled the team with Meanwell's consent, accused Meanwell of “twisting” the facts. In a notarized statement, Golem- geske made a new charge—that Mean- well offered him a drink of whisky when the team was returning from a game this season. Fights Last Night By the Associated Press.
