MATHIAS EXPIRES HERE AT 59 Holder of Congressional Medal of Honor for Boxer Heroism Was Ill Two Weeks. Sergt. Maj. Clarence E. Mathias, 59, United States Marine Corps, retired, died at Naval Hospital Monday after an illness of two weeks. Fe was a holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism in the Boxer F.e- bellion in China. He was to be buried with full mili- tary honors in Arlington National Cemetery today after services at 2 p.m. at Joseph Gawler's Sons’ chapel, 1750 Pennsylvania avenue. Sergt. Maj. Mathias was born in Royalton, Pa, and enlisted in the Army in 1898. A year later he was transferred to the Marine Corps and, after several years of service in both the Army and the Marine Corps, he was retired in 1923 with the rank of sergeant major. He lived at 729 Vir- ginia avenue southeast. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Caro- line Aungst and Mrs, Florence Aungst; a brother, John Mathias; a stepson, John A. Farrell, and three step- daughters, Mrs. Reno 8. Crum, Mrs. William H. WILLIS, 69, POLLARD’S SISTER, DIES Former Governor’s Xin Succumbs at Daughter’s Home in Atlanta. By the Associated Press. ATLANTA, December 12.—Mrs. J. ‘W. Willls, 69-year-old sister of for- mer Gov. John Garland Pollard of Virginia, died here yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs, George B. Hoyt. Mrs. Willis came here as a bride in 1894 and had taken an active part in church and civic work. She was identified with the Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Atlanta League of Women Voters. She was the former Juliet Pollard, native of Richmond, and daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Pollard. Her father was & noted Virginia educator and clergyman. In addition to her daughter and brother, Mrs. Willls is survived by five sisters, Mrs. R. L. Turman, Atlanta; Mrs. G, Harvey Clarke and Mrs. Otho P. Smoot, Richmond; Mrs, M. F. ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 12.— Mrs. Annie Young Jackson, 98, one of the oldest residents of the District of Columbia and a former resident of Alexandria, died yesterday at the home of her greatniece, Mrs. Jesse M. Hadley, 4108 Legation street, Wash- ington. The widow of Capt. John Jackson, a merchant marine captain, Mrs. Jackson was born in Georgetown in October, 1837, and moved to Alexan- dria in childhood. She was the only daughter of Robert and Eleanor Clementson Young and a great-grand- | daughter of one of Gen. Washington's aides. She was a mentber of Grace Episcopal Church here for more than | 80 years. In addition to Mrs. Hadley, she is survived by another greatniece, Miss Janet Young of Washington.
