Jones, Lieut. Walter detached P este six streets appeared yesterday to Have definitely killed the city’s pro- posed $4,500,000 Chandler Park low- cost housing project. J. Newton Brewer, Federal land accumulator, commenting on the ac- tion of the council, which voted four to three not to vacate the streets running through the 13-acre site, de- clared, “That settles it.” The project had been opposed strongly by three members of the council for over six weeks, as P. W. A, officials attempted to clear the way for the project. “There is nothing that can be done now,” Brewer said. “P. W. A. requirements demand that the work be started by December 15, and we couldn’t get this question decided by the courts before that time.” Brewer said he believed efforts would be made to use the $4,500,000 slloted for the project to some other city. “There are 40 cities between San Francisco and New York that want this project,” he said. “Particularly there is Youngstown, Ohio. If we can get under way there before De- cember 15, I think that is where the money will go.” He said he would confer with Washington officials for & decision. The council directed a resolution to Federal officials two weeks ago pro- testing the project, after neighboring property owners claimed it would ot be desirable, and real estate and building firms joined the protest, claiming it represented a Govern- ment attempt to enter into competi- tion with private business. The council action does not affect the $6,000,000 Elder William Brewster glum clearance project on the lower Bast Side, where foundation work is scheduled to begin December 15, MERRILL TO PILOT " ELLSWORTH RESCUE New Plane Obtained to Fly to Aid of Explorer Lost in Antarctica.
