AMUSEMENTS. Girls Urged “ Be Yourself” 'To Get Man and Hold Him Carole Lombard Says Too Much Irony, Forced Intellect, and Cuteness May Be Fatal for Romance. (Mollie Merrick presents Carole Lombard as guest columnist today. Miss Lombard gives advice on how to get a man and hold hin success: fully.) BY CAROLE LOMBARD. OLLYWOOD, December 5 (N.AN.A)—I understand that American swains are developing & strong sales resistance to the wiles of young womanhood. Up in Boston, according to reports, 135 debutantes out of 162 have been relegated to the “nixey” column by a select group of undergraduate authorities at Harvard. haps I have no business writing this. their argument. < But I have been around, and hence am taking this upon myself. | I have no intention of contributing an “advice” column. M'y remarks on how to get a man and hold him are nothing more nor less tha npure com- | mon sense, based on experience and observation. Rule No. 1 in keeping your mascu- line friends in a state of enthusiasm is to give no tongue to sarcasm. Fre- quently a timid girl, laboring under the delusion that she can give her ego a slight lift by snipping at the boy friend, resorts to sarcasm. The lad may be fooled by her sudden show of mental activity, but it also may injure his pride in his mastery. Boys can find plenty of girls to admire them. 8o why should they ask for vinegar | when they know where to find honey? | Consequently, my advice is that, if youre a young thing with an ironic tongue, to hold it, at least- until after | you're married. And then hold it some more. Rule No. 2 concerns possession. Don't act as though the marriage li- cense has been applied for and ob- tained just because a fellow takes you out three or four times. It’s embarrass- | ing to a nice boy, and it gives the other sort a chance to jeer when a girl starts | showing signs of possession. | Rule No. 3—Telephonitis. It's bad technique for a girl to get the telephone habit. Boys like to be flattered, but too much telephoning gives them the impression that they're the quarry. | Fortunately, the benighted day is dead when a girl tagged herself as being a hussy by showing that she liked a boy, | but, at the same time, she can’t maks LAST Since I am not a Harvard man, per- The lads may have a few points in & nuisance of herself by staging too much of a chase. Another “don't” for girls is to side- track the great intellect that is so enor- mous and irrepressible that it must as- sert itself when the boy friend comes around. Don't make the lad feel dumb. The professors’ daughters at Harvard haven't yet learned this strategy, for a number of them have been written off as “serious and flat-heeled.” Naturally, a boy doesn’t want a girl to hold forth on Einstein, peace move- ments or too much of literature and music. Most of lads are beginning to do a lot of thinking on their own account, hence it weakens a girl’s chances when she seizes the ball of | conversation and races down the fieid for a touchdown. When a girl gets | away with the expounding of her ideas, it's a good sign that she has more than her share of beauty and charm. The other kind is usually pictured as wear- ing spectacles and chewing sassafras during a lone hike through the woods I can say that success with men de- pends mostly upon a girl's personality. To sum up an observer’s message, I say “be yourself.” Too much cuteness, | smartness, irony and forced intelligence is no more fun for the girl who's turn- | ing it on than it is for the victim of 1t Personally, I think that the Harvard undergraduates, with their sales re- | sistance, are right. Their little black- balling act now seems like a good thin: They've done themselves some good. but they've done more good for the girls, who now have a chance to im- prove with their new wisdom. That makes it better for all concerned. Some people may be tempted to re- | mark that a Hollywood actress should DAY—“THE CRUSADES,” WITV ELODI Wait til hegr the greatest cast n years...in the greatest / show in THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
