REPARING for the ultra-short P wave broadcasting of both vision and sound, seen as an inevitable future development of radio, the Columbia Broadcasting System has joined the growing array of ultra-short wave licensees and has secured from the Federal Communi- cations Commission authority to oper- ate a 50-watt experimental station atop its New York headquarters building. Although an official statement from the network says the station’s purpose is to study the distortion effects of extremely high frequencies in the New York metropolitan area, where recep- tion is rendered difficult because of RENOVIZE. .. your home Difficult Renovising—Neatly Accomplished the massive steel buildings, it is plain that the station is being designed to make ready for television when it “breaks.” Columbia does not intend to fall behind the National Broad- casting Co. in that field, simply be- cause N. B. C. is owned by Radio Corp. of America, one of the chief American developers of television. Indeed, in a technical way, C. B. 8. will parallel to some extent the Empire State Building tests, which are to be- gin early next year under R. C. A. auspices to determine the practica- bility of television, although it is as- sumed that the Columbia network will utilize either R. C. A. or one of the other visual broadcasting systems that is ultimately brought out. In the meantime, National Broadcasting Co. also is assigning engineers to the ultra-short wave studios, and indeed has already set aside space in Radio MOTOR ANALYSIS Saves You Money Central Auto Works 451 Eye St. N.W. Columbia’s new station is known as W2XDV and is already operating on the 35,600~ kilocycle (8.32-meter) wave length on a dally schedule from 5 to P 10 p.m., carrying the regular programs of Columbia’s New York key station, WABC. Its own experts and the army of amsteurs experimenting on the ultra-shorts will report their re- ception findings to John Dyer, the ouU way result.
