Washingto n Wayside Random Cbservations of Interesting Events and Things. QUITS WINNER. N EDITOR of a country news- paper down in Virginia retired from ‘business recently. His fellow townsmen tendered him s glorious complimentary banquet. The high spot in his retirement lay not so much in the fact that he had carned a deserved rest, but that he was withdrawing from business with $100,000 in his bank account. “To what do you ascribe your bril- liant success in the newspaper field and the accumulation of & fortune?” he was asked. “Well,” the editor replied, “I at- tribute my modest success to the fact | that I have always worked very hard, have been honest in my dealings with everybody, and to a relative who died | recently and left me $99,999.50 in his will.” ek TERROR TALE. There is a high-ranking Army oficer in Washington with many decorations for bravery in action. But he becomes paralyzed with fear when he finds himself alone in the middle of Dupont Circle. He is a victim of the rare and strange nervous disease known as agora- phobia, or fear of open places. Prof. Donald A. Laird of Colgate University, former Washingtonian, mentions the unfortunate colonel as an illustrative case in a recent book dealing with pathological Jears. (QNE_cold night last week Earle Wyville, marriage license clerk at Upper Marlboro, was summoned wv the court house to issue a license to | an excited couple from the lower end of Prince Georges County who did not | choose to wait another day. This was nothing new to Earle, for he is not unaccustomed to crawling out of bed, even in dead Winter, to accommodate an eager swain and his bride-elect. And for so doing he has upon occasions Treceived expressions of gratitude, usually in the form of cur- rency. So it was last week. Upon hand- ing the all-important document to the couple Earle received four $1 bills, two of which were the county's fee for the license. Yesterday Earle re- ceived a letter claiming a “refund.” It said: “I thought you married us and two days later T found out I had to go to a preacher and I had to pay him $2. I think you ought to refund the $2 gave you.” Rk BEAUTY CHAT. DID you know: That Indian potentates used the same means to beautify their favorite wives and their favorite elephants— decorating both with supmptous silks and priceless pearls and diamonds, spraying both with costly perfumes and | painting red the toenails of both? That the beginning of the shower bath was in the beauty parlors of sncient Greece? entertaining its patrons with a pageant of beauty through the ages. * x % % BOUDOIR BOULEVARDO. C, the finest highways in the country. That is the boast of all good little Louisianans. But what they don’t boast about is the fact that these same highways are used by cattle as bed grounds. This fact is thus explained by the staff in Senator Overton's office: “During the day the concrete gets warm.
