Controller McCarl yesterday ad- vanced Works Progress Administration funds totaling $95,850 for installation of water mains in 11 towns in Prince Georges County and $915 for Takoma | Park in Montgomery County. BALTIMORE, December 5.—Low bidders on four grade-crossing elimi- nation projects and a new bridge in St. Marys County were announced by the State Roads Commission today after bids were opened. The grade crossing bids were for the actual bridge only, and did not in- clude grading or paving. Projects, low bidders and amounts were: Harmans grade crossing, Anne Arundel, Mullan Construction Co., $36.800. Edgewater grade crossing, Harford, Binclair & Gregg, Philadelphia, $72,956. Dorsey grade crossing, Anne Arun- del, P. Reddington & Sons, Baltimore, $39,793. Sabillasville grade crossing, Pred- erick, Continental Contracting Co., Baltimore, $38,220. St. Inigoes Bridge, St. Marys Coun- ty, and relocation of & third of a mile of gravel road, H. W. Hewitt & Sons, Valley Lee, Md., $10,886. Contracts for the projects are ex- pected to be let by December 15. IOWA GAMING PLOT TRIAL NEARS CLOSE By the Associated Press. SIOUX CITY, Iowa, December 5.— Well into its fourth week, the gam- bling conspiracy trial of Attorney General Edward L. O'Connor yester- day found the State apparently near- ing the close of its case. Special Prosecutor H. M. Havner entered as evidence 513 exhibits, in- cluding records purporting to show the existence and operations of a local slot machine syndicate. Among the latest introduced were Btate income tax returns of the Iowa- Dakota Co.—reputed syndicate head- guarters—and the individual returns of Tom L. Toggart, Glenn Scott and the late Tom Brislane, all charged with operating the syndicate. The company returns showed gross 1934 receipts of $14,735.60, but the net for the year was only $2,217.20, after deductions of $12518.40 were made. Deductions included losses of $1,044 from confiscated and stolen machines, Fach partner was listed as having re- ceived about $739. Lives 15 Miles From City, but Is 62 Years Late in Filing Claim By the Associated Press. BIRMINGHAM, Ala, Decem- ber 5—William Faris, aged col- ored man, got around to putting in his claim against the city to- day for work done in the cholera epidemic in June, 1873. “I'd a-come sooner,” he apol- to Miss Eunice Hewes, city clerk, “but I lives 15 miles from here and my health ain't Faris had no written evidence of his 62-year-old claim nor was any on file at the City Hall, and lack of proof may defeat his ef- fort.
