THE EVENING SYTAR WASHINGTON, D. RADm AI]V[R"SING Barber’s Daughter in Debut MURDER UF IHREE BEING QUESTIONED Trade Commission Esti- mates 10% Possibly Is “False and Misleading.” By the Associated Press. The Federal Trade Commission esti- imates that about 10 per cent of the radio advertising continuities it has snalyzed have been found ‘“possibly false and misleading.” The commission began examination of radio advertising a little more than a year ago after many years of study of newspaper and magazine ad- wertising. It has the power to stop galse advertising. Up to June 30, 1935, the commis- #ion said in its annual report, 439,253 radio continuities had been received. ©Of these a preliminary review had been completed on 376,539, resulting in 38,873 being set aside as “possibly false and misleading” for further con- sideration and possible action. Magazine Advertising Studied. In the magazine field, between Jan- vary 1 and June 30, 1935, magazines having a circulation of 27,220,061 capies had been received. Up to June 30, the commission said, “a discerning preliminary scrutiny of 1.126 individual current advertisements had been performed, resulting in 284 being reserved for special’ considera- tion.” No statistics on newspaper adver- tisements were given. The magazine advertisements were collested from magazines in special classes. The commission found it unnecessary to “review all the issues of publication of a high ethical standard where the publishers carefully censor all copy before acceptance.” Curb on Unlawful Abuses. “In the examination of radio con- tinuities, as well as of newspapers, magazine and other periodical adver- tising,” the commission said, “the commission’s sole purpose is to curb unlawful abuses of the freedom of ex- pression guaranteed by the Consti- tution. “It does not undertake to diotate “Barber of Sevilie,” formerly of St. Louls, and Schipa as they celebrated.
