Funeral services for Orestes Garcla, 43, consul attached to the Cuban Embassy, were held yesterday at the 8. H. Hines funeral home, 2901 Fourteenth street. The body was taken by train to Miami en route to Havana for burial. Accompanying the body were the widow, Senora Cecelia F. Garcia; a daughter, Gloria; Senora Garcia's mother, Mrs. Ferrero, and Senor Car- los Tornes, vice consul attached to the embassy, who will represent the latter. ‘The services here were attended by the Ambassador of Cuba, Senor Dr. Guillermo Patterson y de Jauregui, and numerous other friends of Senor Garcia in the diplomatic and consular services, Senor Garcia died Thursday of a heart attack at his home, 5018 Six- teenth street. LEIGH DIES; WASBOY VETERAN Doorkeeper at Capitol En- listed in Union Army When 14. John W. Leich, 89, who enlisted in the Unlon Army as a 14-year-old boy from Henry Ward Beecher’s “Phalanx,” died today at his home, 1207 East Capitol street, after a brief ill- ness. He had been a resident of ‘Washington for seven years and a doorkeeper at the Capitol. Born in Ireland, Mr. Leich came to the United States when 2 years old and seftled with his family on Long ILsland. In his early boyhood John W. Leich, D€ Was a Sunday school &cholar of Rev. Mr. Beecher, the noted orator- clergyman, and at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the 1st Long Island Volunteers. Throughout the war he served with distinction, saw action in 17 battles and was still a minor when honorably discharged on June 29, 1865. Won Officer’s Praise. Young Leich was a favorite among the officers and older men with whom he fought, and Gen. Catlin, whose leg | was amputated on the battlefleld at Frederick, Md., gave him the title “Handsome Jack” and praised the youth for his valor in defying a rain | of bullets to raise the flag aloft after it had been shot down from the flag staff. After the war, Mr. Leich returned to his home on Long Island and later | moved to Brooklyn, N. Y, He was em= ployed for many years as a special in- vestigator by the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Came Here in 1928, In 1928 Mr. Leich came here to live with his daughters, Miss Catherine A. | Leich and Miss Harriet V. Leich, at the | East Capitol street address. He was| among the Civil War veterans honored with employment in the House side of the Capitol and was well known there | by Senators and Representatives. Besides his two daughters here, Mr. Leich is survived by his widow, Mrs. Susan Hamilton Leich; three sons, John of Hollis, Long Island; Harry of Bellmore, Long Island, and George | Leich of Allentown, Pa.; a sister, Miss | Frances M. Leich of Washington; six grandchildren and three great-, grand- children.
