—12 “HEN-PECK” SHOW REGALES AUDIENCE Young Husband Takes First . Prize in Food Show | Entertainment. A young husband just out of college who was married on Armistice day won the contest for the most “hen- pecked” man at the District Grocery Stores food show last night. To the crowd, at least, he seemed the most dejected and fearful as his bride of a week, threatened him with a roll- tng pin and commanded him to curl | her hair. The applause of the audience, which filled the Calvert Exhibit Hall. clearly indicated its decision. The winner was George Anderson. who came here a day or so ago with | his wife and is staying at 1229 Twelfth street. They are from Vermillon, S. Dak. and met at the University of South Dakota, where both were stu- dents. Job. peted for the doubtful honor of being adjudged the most “hen pecked.” To add realism to the scene, their woman partners threatened them with house- hold weapons. Besides the rolling pin there was a butcher knife, a vase, & &tew pan and a frying pan. A capacity crowd visited the show last night, which was the second eve- ning performance. Demonstrations and games at various booths kept them emused. One-year-old Jacquelin N. Priest, daughter of Mrs. Edison D. Priest of 1300 Massachusetts avenue, won the baby contest at the first matinee of the show, held yesterday afternoon. Competition was keen among the 50 or more infants, but Jacquelin emerged the clear choice of the audience, whose applause designated the winner. She received a cash prize. Tomorrow night there will be a baby bathing and dressing contest for men only, but advance coaching from their women folk is permitted Dolls will be used to avoid the danger of intrusting live babies to inexperienced hands. The men will be lined up on the contest platform with soot-covered dolls. At the start- ing signal they will begin washing and then dressing the dolls, which will be closely inspected when they have finished to make sure a good Job was done. An electric food mixer was given away yesterday afternoon and a wash- ing machine last night. A radio will he presented to the lucky ticket holder tonight. Major prizes are given each afternoon and evening of the show. An automobile is the prize for the final performance Saturday night. Protesting against the amount of | Russian anthracite coal being shipped into this country, a delegation of offi- cers of the Anthracite Coal Operatcrs and union officials urged President Roosevelt yesterday to increase the duty from $2 per ton, the present rate, to $5 per ton. The delegation declared the present duty has proved inadequate because of the large increase in importation of Russian coal. ‘The delegation said afterward the President would take the request un- der consideration. It had been sug- | gested by the coal operators that this | increase might be effected by invoking | the anti-dumping regylations of the Treasury Department.
