MISS HOEY SULCIDE, GRAND JURY FINDS Second Inquiry Into Death of Blues Singer Is Ended. By the Associated Press. WEST CHESTER, Pa., November 19.—A week-long grand jury investi- gation of the death of Evelyn Hoey has ended in a decision that the blond blues singer shot herself in the country home of Henry H. Rogers, 3d, il fortune heir. ‘The inquiry was called by District Attorney William E. Parke after a Chester County coroner’s jury found the honey-haired stage and screen entertainer was killed by “a person or persons unknown” the night of Sep- tember 11. Inquest Jury Criticized. In addition to determining that | Miss Hoey's death was a suicide, the grand jury’s presentment late yester- day criticized the conduct of “certain members” of the inquest jury. It said there was evidence of “too Intimate association” between several coroner’s jurors and newspaper men and that a postponement of an in- quest session was necessary because one juror was “under the influence of Uquor.” The grand jury found “no corrupt o criminal interference” with the coroner’s jury. Witnesses Appear Voluntarily. Rogers, an heir to the Stand Ol fortune of his multi-millionaire father, | appeared voluntarily before the grand juy, as did William J. Kelley, free lance movie cameraman, who was in | Rogers’ remodeled farmhouse the | night Miss Hoey was shot. | The oil fortune heir said the one- | time Broadway musical comedy slnxer‘ was despondent over her failure to win continued success on the stage.| NEWSPAPER WOMAN | WINNER OF AWARD | E e { Mrs. Ogden Reid Honored in! Achievements—Mrs. Roosevelt | Among Guests. 1 By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 19.—Mrs. Ogden Reid, vice president of the | New York Herald Tribune, was an- | nounced last night as the 1935 winner | of the American Woman's Association | award for eminent achievement. | The announcement was made b!‘! Dean Virginia C. Gildersleeve of Bar- nard College at a dinner attended by more than 800 women, including Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mrs. Car- Tie Chapman Catt, who were guests of honor. Mrs. Reid, in accepting the award, sald the honor belongs to the news- paper with which she is associated, rather than to her, and in general to the great body of newspapers which tried to serve their commuuities in- dependently. Mrs. Molly Werren Wilcox, owner and publisher of the Wichita (Kans.) Democrat, one of the speakers, said there are about 300 or 400 woman editors and publishers in the United States, but that no effort has ever been made to count the “husband- and-wife” newspapers. “Many an editor,” she said, “owes his start in life to such s helpmate who, as one of them said, raised her baby in a waste paper basket.” Other speakers were Fannie Hurst, author, and Judith Waller of the National Broadcasting Co.’s educa- tional service. Dorothy Thompson, writer and wife of Sinclair Lewls, was toastmistress. - . Whitsey Joins A. F. G. E. Staff. Charles H. Whitsey, corresponding secretary of the District Department, American Federation of Government Employes, has been added to the head- quarters staff.
