Chest Dollars in Action Washington Home for Foundlings Helps Young Mother Support 3 Children and Pre- pare for Better Home. How to keep three children and her- self on the $14 a week she was earning in & laundry, was the problem facing Mrs. W. The children’s father had been placed in an institution, so it was her duty to keep the family together. She had taken a business course before marriage, and realized that, if compelled to remain in the laundry, she could not give her children the advantages they should have. If she could only review her busi- ness course, the prospects for the future would be much brighter, but she was paying $13 of her meager salary for room and board, so there was little left for even the carfare necessary to take her to one of the public night schools. Then, on top of everything, one child broke a collar bone and another developed measles. In desperation, she tumed to the Family Service Bureau. Washington Wayside Random Observat Events and Things. LADIES IN WAITING. HIS is a true story. and it prob- ably has a moral, too. Two men from-Washington went to New York over the week end. Arrived, they called up two girls and invited them for dinner that evening | at 7 o'clock. That done, they made the rounds of several lounges which sell stronger than soft drinks Feeling quite “weary” when they returned to their hotel, they decided that a little nap was in order. At 6:30 one awoke and told, the other if they wished to meet their dinner companions at o'clock they would have to hurry. They hurried so much it gave them a chance to snach another drink. As they were inbibing it one ofiof them observed: “There aren't many people around here for this time of the night.” To which the waiter replied. “Night! It's 7 o'clock in the morning and you'd better get out of those tuxedos.” X ok K X OUR GOODNESS, TOO. “Who is this?” asked a feminine voice over the phone. “This is the financial desk of The Evening Star,” came the answer. “My goodness!” she exclaimed, and hung up. NE\VSPAPER MEN are artful—or terrible! A Washington scribe residing in an apartment was greatly disturbed sev- eral nights as a result of being awak- end about midnight by the noise of a typwriter being used in an adjoining spartment Several times he rapped on the, wall | believing the occupant of the other apartment, a woman, would take the | hint and stop her work. To no avail, | however. The man is an early riser and de- vised the scheme of winding his alarm clock at 5 am. and holding it against she wall let go. This was repeated two days. After that time there was no more late typing in the adjoining apartment. B e WHAT A FEVER! PBRIDGES have fevers! Because they do, provision has been made that the internal tempera- ture of the new Calvert Street Bridge may be taken by engineers at any future time. In pouring concrete for this span, three temperature units were allowed to be set in each of the three arches of the span. At any future time an engineer may attach a meter to wires Jeading from these units and tell the | exact temperature of the inside of the | concrete. RS. PAULINE PEARSON, an em- ploye of the P. W. A, has or- ganized 'a Worry Club. She decided | that she could not stick to worrying very long at a time, so she gathered some of her friends who worried too much, and others who didn’t worry at all, and formed a club. The idea was | for each member to worry one hour | each day, begininng at four in the afternoon. Mrs. Pearson thinks in this way the “worries” will be more evenly distributed. * ¥ X % ALL USED TO BE VANITY. Persons seeking to be compli- mentary or flattering sometimes have an innocent way of puncturing an individual's vanity, if any. Consider the case of a radio news broadcaster who met some new people at a recent banquet. At the conclusion of the banquet one lady, as the party broke up, erpressed what she described as her pleasure at meeting the broad- caster, and then added: “I emjoy your articles so much. I read every one of them.” Chest Broadcast A continuous radio program broadcast by remote control from six agencies of the Community Chest will be put on the air to- morrow from 3 to 3:45 p.m. by Station WJISV. The agencies whose activities will be broadcast right from the scene are: Boys' Club of Wash- ington, 230 C street; Childrgn's Country Home, Eighteenth street and Bunker Hill road northeast; Juanita K. Nye Council House, 609 Sixth street southwest; St. Anna’s Home, 2224 N street; St. Joseph's Home and School, East- ern avenue and Bunker Hill road northeast, and Salvation Army, 426 Sixth street. | Hotel, 12:30 pm. Now, the two younger children are happy in the Washington Home for Foundlings, one of the institutions supported by the Community Chest, 1 where they play with other children | of their own age, and are taught the simple lessons their mother is anxious for them to learn. The older | child was placed in another home, as only those under six are cared for at the Home for Foundlings. Mrs. W. has the definite promise of | a position within the next few months | that will pay her a salary sufficient to re-establish the home that means 50 much to her. Had it not been for the temporary help of the Home for Foundlings, kept open by gifts through the Com- | munity Chest, which enabled her to regain the ground she had lost, an- other little brood would have been scattered, and an intelligent mother would have had only memories to carry her through life ions of Interesting | LIKE SCHOOL DAYS. \VASHINGTON traffic law violators | can be grateful that they do not | live in Maine. ‘ A visitor from the Pine Tree State | | says that one traffic court judge there not only is imposing heavy fines and Judiclary.
