BY LINCOLN ELLSWORTH. DUNDEE ISLAND, Antarctica, No- vember 14—Dundee Island has been a lucky find. The Polar Star, my air- plane, in which I hope to fly across Antarctica, is now resting on the solid snow above the island. Tuesday night we slung the plane from the deck of the motor ship Wyatt Earp to the flat bay ice and dragged her a half mile to the shore. Today, if the weather holds, we will make some short flights, | At 3 o'clock Tuesday morning we | passed through a maze of icebergs to reach Antarctica Sound. Some of the bergs were a good 150 feet above | the water line. A series of curious small cyclonic columnar snowstorms | were being driven by a high wind to- | ward the sun, which, at that time, was just rising in the southeast. Each storm blanketed the scene about us, and as each one passed the sun’s rays caught the vertical faces of the ice- bergs and flashed a colored signal. s Leather GLOVES Every Conceivable Style They appeared like a string of flash- ing beacons showing us the way. It was a good omen, for we came to the northwest of Dundee Island to find a practically level area a few feet above' sea level, triangular in shape, which affords a runway of abqut 1,200 yards in each direction. By taking advantage of the flat bay ice, which is still four feet thick, we can get a mile-long ruhway in a south- west-northeast direction. It is an almost ideal field and easily accessible. The colored race in America should pool not less than $50,000,000 in a great “national fund” for building up the economic condition of the race, Dr. William J. Thompkins, recorder of deeds, said in a radio speech Tues- day. Speaking over Station WMAL in observance of Negro Achievement week, sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Dr. Thompkins suggested the fund be handled by a board of trustees of trained business men. “We need men of integrity and genijus for business who should handle this fund,” he suggested, “and should be given carte blanche in their capac- ity as national trustees to eliminate Dr. Special Lot Men's WOOL SWEATERS including heavy Crew Neck Shakers, Zipper D. WEST PALM BEACH, November 14 () —Eleven-year-old Clifford Jackson was suffocated here yesterday when he was buried in & small cave which he and several companions were dig- ging in the, yard at the rear of his home.
