~ FORUM TO REVIEW RED CROSS WORK Humane Service in Many Disasters to Be Drama- tized on Air. FFORTS of the American Red Cross to save life and assuage human suffering in the face of disaster will be described dramatically durln~ the National Radio Forum tonig @ over W. R. C. and a coast-to-coast network of other National Broadcasting Co stations. The forum, arranged by The Wash- Ington Star, will be broadcast from 10:30 to 11 o'clock. The program will open with “@he Evening Star March” by the United States Army Band, under direction of Capt. Stannard, and will close with a brief announcement by Admiral Cary 'T. Grayson, chairman of the American Red Cross. The dramatization portrays at its beginning a Civil War scene with Clara Barton, founder of the Amer- lcan Society, administering to the wounded. | Following in quick succession, dra- | CaritaL’s Rapio PROGRAMS Monday, November 11. matic episodes of Red Cross m’ and increased service to humanity tell] how the Red Cross of this country met its first major disaster relief op- eration, the Johnstown flood. Next comes the inauguration of Red Cross nursing service in the war with Spain, when Red Cross nurses were accepted for the first time in a mil- itary hospital. Then comes a scene presenting the efficacy of Red Cross relief im the Galveston storm of 1900, with 4,000 hurricane dead and as many homes destroyed. The incident of 1905 is dramatized when a President of the United States first asks the Nation to help the Red Cross help others. This is followed by an episode telling briefly how the Red Cross raised $100,000,000 for World War relief. In rapid succession mention is made of Red Cross aid extendea in the Pueblo flood of 1921, the Florida hur- ricane of 1927, the Mississippl Valley floods of 1927, greatest disaster in the history of America, with 15,000,000 acres flooded, seven States affected and nearly 1,000,000 people homeless. The dramatization closes with this year's New York flood of unprece- dented severity, showing how the Red Cross and other public and pri- vate organizations administered to the needy. Laudin, editor of the Review, makes a plea for the speedy demise of this particular ter of good business attacks on their programs are soft-pedaled. “We suggest that amateur hours be converted into variety programs eme ploying concert and dramatic artists, vaudeville actors and a master of cere- monies to preserve the continuity. To give young people who are eager for a hearing their chance a national committee should be organized, com- posed of radio production managers, music and dramatic critics and or- chestra leaders. Subcommittees in large cities throughout the country could care for aspirants outside of New York. B. C. He will be identified as “The Cross-Roads Philosopher.” “Our grievance with amateur hours is not based on the fact that they are making a few men wealthy at the cxpense of ambitious young people and unemployed professionals who perform at ‘amateur rates,’ " she com- ments. “What we do challenge vig- orously ‘is the feeble justification offered for prolonging the amateur hour cycle The most frequent ex- cuse is that it discovers new talent. But what for?
