REA HOUSING LENDING | HITS $423.514 410 F. H. A. Records $25,- 000,000 on Insured Loans in Two Weeks. The volume of business done by private lending institutions under the national housing act through October | 31 totaled $425514,470, it was an- nounced today by Stewart McDonald, Federal housing administrator. This was during a period of the year which .ormally shows a seasonal decline. For the month of October alone the figures totaled $54,362,984. Two weeks ago the combined busi- ness had reached the $400,000,000 mark. Thus in two weeks (11 business | days) the Federal Housing Adminis- | tration recorded more than $25,000,000 | of insured modernization and repair notes and mortgage: selected for ap- praisal. The individual totals are moderni- gation and repair notes insured for October, $27,163,130; to date, $194,- 877,984, mortgages selected for ap- praisal for October, $27,199,854; to date, $209,264,612; low-cost housing mortgages accepted for insurance to date, $21,514,874. While the $425514.470. all strictly | private capital, represents only notes | and mortgages presented to the Housing Administration for insurance, Mr. McDonald estimates it probably is less than half of the total amount of private capital used throughout the country in modernization and new construction generated by the Federal Government'’s interest in housing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, residential construction frc 1 March through September, 1935, shows a monthly mean average gain of more than 169 per cent over the! same period for 1934. INSULATION ADVISED A thoroughly insulated heating sys- tem will save a considerable percent- age of fuel cost per year. By thor- oughly insulating is meant complete coverage of the boiler and the piping with first-class insulation material. If you are building a new house and intend using piped heat—that is, steam, hot water, or vapor—such an insulation job would pay for itself in a very few years. If your heat- ing system is not insulated. it would | pay you to insulate the boiler and all exposed piping. There are various materials in sheet and block form for insulating a boiler. ‘They are put on over a special ce- ment, are secured by wire, covered with another layer of the same ce- ment and then muslin. For pipes there are moulded blocks of insulating material. These are put on and then a muslin covering sewed tightly over them. All joints are cov- ered with a plastic insulating cement. —_— . Paints Aid Sunshine. Much can be done with paint to bring sunshine into a room that is| discouragingly dark in the daytime. Have the ceiling painted a light yel- low. The window sills, together with the rest of the window woodwork, can be painted a slightly darker yellow. ‘Walls. doors, and door frames can be coated With a soft cream color and the floor painted or stained a dark brown. 2815 38th St. N.W. HEN Mrs. Lightfoot the Deer reached the thicket in which were hidden her two precious fawns, the three Dogs who were hunting them were dangerously near. At a signal from their Mother the fawns leaped to their feet and followed her. There was no chance now of even trying to break the trail. Their one chance for escape from those dreadful killers be- hind them was to get to water, and, even then, there was no certainty that titey could escape. So Mrs. Lightfoot led the way straight for the pond of Paddy the Beaver, which happened to be the nearest water. A beautiful sight that Mother and her two spotted babies made as they dashed through the Green Forest, bounding as only members of their family can bound. It didn't seem, possible that any one could want to harm such beautiful folk. Their eyes were already red with th> desire to kill. It wasn't that they were hungry. It wasn't that they needed the food. At home those Dogs were well fed. They were not homeless Dogs. No, indeed. They were hunting those helpless Deer for just one purpose, and one only, the excitement of kill- ing. Why they should have had that urge to kill none can say. But it does happen sometimes among the gentlest of Dogs, and always it is some of the helpless folk they seek to kill, ones that cannot fight back, such as Deer and Sheep. . Lightfoot was, you know, the father of the fawns. They didn't know this, but he knew that they were his children, for were they not with Mrs. Lightfoot? He had heard the baying of that Hound com- ing through the Green Forest, and he had guessed who it was that that Hound was after. So he had waited there, his head thrown high as he listened and watched. His antlers were in the velvet and only half grown. They were useless as weapons. How he did wish that they were full grown and hard, as they would be a few weeks later. Out from the brush leaped Mrs. Lightfoot, and after her leaped one fawn. Straight into the water dashed Mrs. Lightfoot, and the fawn followed. The other fawn was a few jumps be- hind. You see, she hadn't been able to keep up with her brother. Almost at her heels raced the two Dogs who had outrun the Hound. They could not follow by scent, but they could follow by sight, and this is what they had done for a short distance. Lightfoot, with the hair along his shoulders standing on end, whistled sharply, then he plunged forward along the shore toward those Dogs. He was just too late to save the lit- tle fawn. Yes, sir, he was just too late. Out in the water Mrs. Lightfoot | was swimming, and close to her side the other fawn was swimming. One of the Dogs started to swim after them, but Lightfood plunged at him ! so fiercely with his sharp-edged hoofs that the Dog gave up. So Mrs. Light- foot and one fawn escaped. «Copyright. 1935.) McGee, director of the Social Service Center of the Salvation Army, located at First and the general public for the donation of furniture, old clothes, newspapers, magasines and any other articles. “The demands this year are greater than ever before. We have more per- sons to care for than at any previous time and our only method of secur- ing funds is through the renovation of discarded materials,” he declared. The Social Service Center, which has been an integral part of Wash- ington’s most successful charitable organizations for 30 years, is now housing and feeding approximately 85 men at its new bullding, which was completed last Spring from funds accumulated over a period of many years. ‘The men are housed in clean, airy dormitories and their employment in the workshop adjacent to the build- ing occupies them during the day, mending, repairing and rebuilding in | many cases. In the evenings a large recreation hall provides healthy en- tertainment. 15 Women Employed In addition to these persons, there also are about 15 women employed at the center, none of whom live at the building. Their work is in connec- tion with remaking, cleaning and pressing clothing donated, while the men are busy in other divisions; for- mer iron workers in a department for stoves and refrigerators; former cabi- net makers in the furniture division and other trades are represented by many of the men, taken from all walks of life and evidently happy in their second chance at recovery with the Salvation Army. The Social Service Center has rendered help to many persons, desti- tute and seeking employment, but, in addition, funds and clothing often have been supplied to persons who were unable to secure the needed | employment. | In the large, cool depths of the | workshop the men are busy all day. | In one division there are a number of | unskilled laborers at work baling and | weighing old paper and magazines, | which are shipped to paper centers. | Ot Many Occupations. | ‘These men come from many strange | occupations, dragged down to pov-| erty by the strange quirks of depres- ion. x Brigadier McGee, who has been in social service work for many years 5520 Conn. Me. 1143 ¢ TO THE e FEDERAL HOUSING ADMINISTRATION We have just completed our first six months of home building under the Federal Housing Administra- tion Plan of architectural inspection and mortgage in- surance. Federal Housing inspection of our plans before construction, and inspection of our houses during con- struction has aided us in building even better homes in our two suburban communities—Glenbrook Village and Glenbrook Knoll. It has been our experience that home buyers have utmost confidence in houses approved by your organiza- tion as eligible for Federal Housing Loans. The purchasers of our new ‘houses have experi- enced very little difficulty in placing loans for eighty per cent (80%) of the purchase price of their new houses. You ate contributing substantially to the estab- lishment of our two comm.unitles of honestly built, at- tractive American homes just beyond the Bank corner in Bethesda, Maryland. Your whole-hearted co-opera- tion is helping us to give profitable employment to scores of skilled trade workmen. 1t is our constant endeavor to conduct our building operations in such a high-grade manner as to merit your continued co-operation. There is never any solicitation for funds by the Social Service Center division of the Salvation Army and all persons are warned to beware of imposters posing as representatives of this division, The center collects odds and ends of furniture and clothing and rehabilitates them for resale at a very small price, the pro- ceeds being devoted to the support of the persons given employment.
