FINANCIAL, CORPORATE BONDS REMAIN NARROW Changes Mostly Fr,.actional. Only $160,000 of Federal Issues Traded. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 26.—Corpo- Tate bond prices moved only fraction- ally either way today in an unusually quiet session that had little feature. United States Government bonds changed hands to the extent of only $160,000, par value, and prices were mixed, 3-32ds lower to 5-32ds higher. Foreign bonds were generally steady. Transfers of $5,390,000 compared with $4,758,000 last Friday. The As- sociated Press averages .1 of a point higher to .2 of a point lower. A handful of scattered movements ©of 1 to 2 points stood out boldly against the general background of small fractional fluctuations recorded by the main body of active loans. Among these were Murray Body 6'2s, up 1% points at 200, a new 1935 high; Niagara Shares 5!%s, up 2 at 8712, also a new high for the year, and International 1% lower at 68. CIGARETTE INDUSTRY FACES EXPANSION Consumption Has Rebounded From Depression to Point Above 1929 Levels. By the Associated Press. New Orleans NEW YORK, October 26.—Soaring | eigarette consumption—to peaks above those of 1929—has led fipancial cir- cles to examine into the possibilities of further growth for the industry. From 1920 to 1929, domestic con- sumption of cigarettes shot ahead at a yearly rate of 11.7 per cent, a pace | considerably faster than that of most other products. Rebounding from valley, consumption in 1934 showed an upturn of 123 per cent over 1933. ‘This, says Standard Statistics, Inc., “should not be taken as an indica- | tion that the former iong-term growth rate of 12 per cent annually is to be | resumed.” INVESTING COMPANIES NEW YORK. NEW YORK, October 26.—Price changes in the markets for heavy and fine chemicals were fairly even in both directions last week as far as general influence was concerned, advances being more numerous than reductions, the Oil, Paint and Drug Reporter will say in its October 28 issue. Buying showed further expan- sion, but only within the limits of cur- rent needs; further commitments awaited announcement of 1936 sched- ules. Higher prices were quoted on an- timonate of soda, domestic casein, vermilion, quicksilver, camphor, Congo | copal, dried blood, imported bone meal, Chesapeake fish scrap, Japanesc sardine meal, tankage and nitrogen- ous fertilizer stuff. Competition caused a sharp reduction in the price of tri- sodium phosphate. Other reductions affected dicalcium phosphate, anti- mony metal, butyl alcohol, butyl ace- tate, and bentonite. The Reporter's composite index number of prices for heavy and fine chemicals was unchanged at 125.9 (compared with August 1, 1914, as 100). In comparison with average prices in 1926 (as 100), the Reporter’s index number is now 89.1, against 88.9 at this time last year. Chicago Grain By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 26.—Uncertain- | ties regarding disposal of Canada’s big wheat surplus, together with Winripeg price smashes to below an officially guaranteed rural minimum, tumbled wheat values everywhere today. All deliveries of wheat at Winnipeg fell 3 cents a bushel, the full limit allowed there during any one day's | dealings. Chicago wheat receded a | maximum of 2'x cents. Many unconfirmed rumors were cur- rent as to possible changes in grain- marketing policy by the newly elected Canadian administration because of | disappointing volume of Canada's grain export business. Wheat in Chicago closed nervous, 153-17g under yesterday's finish, De- cember 987298 corn | December 6033a6035: oats | and provisions unchanged to a set- | back of 7 cents. This was the first time the Winnipeg | wheat market has dropped under 87’z cents since a government minimum price at that level was officially guar- anteed to Canadian farmers a month ago. Preceding today's price break at Winnipeg, it was reported Argen- tine shippers were selling wheat fu- tures on account of improved crop | prospects for wheat in Argentina. | Notice, too, was taken of lower quota- tions both at Liverpool and Buenos | Aires, especially an unsteady close in ’Buenm Aires today, suggesting sharp | competition ahead for Canada. Rains in Nebraska, Kansas and ‘Onhhnma likely to benefit domestic wheat crop prospects, had a contribut- ing bearish influence. The chief fac- tor disturbing to confidence of holders | of wheat, however, was persistent rela- f{i\‘e meagerness of European takings | of Canadian wheat. Canadian ship- pers reported that only a small amount of business to overseas was in progress today. Corn, oats, rye and provisions all weakness. | Forecasts of unfavorable rainy weather in the corn belt had but a transient stimulating effect in the corn market. On the other hand, for the first time in a long while primary receipts of | corn were larger than a year ago. | Closing indemnities: Wheat—Decem. ber, 9735 to 971, 100 to 100'<: May, 6'2 to 965, 99% to 99'5; July, 2715 ‘to 2;'4. 89!4.
