Taliaferro, regent for the District of Columbia. They will be in two types, the de luxe plates being decorated with bands of silver luster, and the others, cream- bordered. Kenmore, where George Washing- ton and his mother, Mary Ball Wash- ington, spent many days, originally consisted of 861 acres, personally sur- veyed by Washington after its pur- chase from Richard Wyatt Royston in 1752. It was sold after the Revolu- tionary War and the death of Col. Lewis to pay debts he had incurred in making guns for the Revolutionary forces as chief commissioner of a small arms plant at Fredericksburg. Was Civil War Hospital. During the War Between the States the mansion was used as a Federal hospital. After changing hands many times, it again was offered for sale in 1922. Fifteen Fredericksburg women purchased the estate for $30,000 and formed the Kenmore Association, pay- ing off the debt through public sub- scription in three years. The present indebtedness was in- curred by purchase of original fur- nishings and land in rear of the home to permit restoration of the historic garden, through which Washington and his mother, as well as the Lewis family, walked. As soon as purchase of the garden area is completed, it will be restored to its original beauty. President Calvin Coolidge said: “Kenmore should be saved for its own sake, It must be saved for patriotic America.” One of the most recent acquire- ments for the estate is an original painting of Col. Lewis, and another of Betty Washington. The latter for- merly hung.at Mount Vernon, it was sald. The pictures were presented the estate by Lewis Smoot, a descendant of Col. Lewis. “Mammy” Serves Tea. Many historic and original furnish- ings grace the Kenmore mansion, Mrs. ‘Taliaferro declared. She added that tea was served in the mansion each Saturday afternoon by “Mammy,” an old colored cook. Upkeep of the historic home is| financed by active membership of the | Kenmore Association, admissions and | special gifts. “We have never asked nor received Federal or State aid,” the association | points out. “Kenmore represents the best in Colonial architecture and the | best of the life and culture of its day. | It perpetuates the ideals on which this | country was founded and has become | & great Nation.” JUNIOR BAR GROUP HERE TOTALS 480 People’s Counsel William A.
