In the majority of instances | this forced circulation will enable you | to obtain well balanced heat through= | out your home without making elab- crate changes in the piping system. The idea behind this is easily under- stood when you stop to compare the operation of your present “gravity” hot water system with the “forced” system. In the gravity plant it is necessary for the boiler to absorb sufficient heat to raise the water temperature of al- most the entire system. When this is done natural water circulation is started—the radiators cool the water —then being colder and heavier, it THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. The building, located |in the heart.of Rockville’s business & | district, will be 54 feet wide by 105 flows back to_the boiler, and so on around. It is obvious that all of this takes time and fuel, while if only the water in the boiler were heated up, then circulated quickly up into the house by the pump, many of the costly heat losses would be eliminated. To clarify the operation of this hook-up—the fuel burner automat- jcally maintains a constant tempera- ture in only the boiler water, a check valve in the supply line remaining closed, not allowing water to circulate. When heat is needed up in the house the thermostat turns on the circulat- ing pump—hot boiler water forces open the check valve and travels up to the radiators—heating the house and finally shutting off when the thermostat is satisfied. By using this check valve in the supply pipe, which opens only when the circulator is forcing water through it, it is possible to use the house heat- ing boiler in the Summer for the not water supply. As the circulator is shut off entirely and the check valve is “CLARENFORD” REASONABLE DOWN PAYMENT—BALANCE LIKE RENT All Brick Construc- tion 0ak Floors H.-W.H. engineers have found that fuel sav- ings up to 20 per cent have been realized using this type of system. The cost of supplying your domestic hot water is almost entirely covered by this saving, and during the Summer a definite reduction in expense should be noticed. Covers Filing Cabinets. A man who does a great deal of his professional work at home, involv- |ing the filing of letters, papers, and drawings, recently bought two second- hand wooden commercial filing cases. He removed the moldings at the top and bottom and took off the metal hardware (replacing it with wooden knobs). Then placing the files paral- lel with the wall, on either side of the double door leading from his study to the living room, he had the car-' penter build book cases on the sides. | Painted to match the woodwork, the ! | filing cabinets now almost completely | | disappear in the background. .
