The energetic Washington agents made a better record than their co- ‘workers in any of the nearby States. North Carolina business was up 15 per cent over Septembre, 1934; Vir- ginia gained' 8 per cent, Maryland added 4 per cent in new insurance, the same as the national average pick-up, while South Carolina re- ported an advance of 3 per cent. ‘Wesé Virginia, however, was off 3 per cent on total sales. New business in the Capital in Sep- tember totaled $4,439.000, in Mary- land $5.880,000, in Virginia $5.305,- 000, in West Virginia $3,777,000, North Carolina $6,425,000 and South Caro- lina $2,302,000. In Washington 58 per cent of the leading companies re- ported improvement over last year. Only four States stood higher tnan this city in the national list, wnich was headed by South Dakota with a 46 per cent gain, improved farm in- come being the reason ascribed for the upturn. North Dakota came next with a 35 per cent rise. In the September report covering large cities, Los Angeles came the nearest to Washington, noting a 20 per cent gain. With the exception of Cleveland’s 13 per cent advance, all the other big cities were under 10 per cent in their gains. The same is true of their business for the first nine months. The figures for Wash- ington for September and for the first nine menths of the year supply ur- ther evidence that so far as the Capi- tal is concerned the depression is over and has been for some time. A. B. A. to Discuss Laws. Discussions of the effects of new Government laws and policies on vari- ous classes of banking institutions will play a prominent part in the di- vision and section meetings at the | American Bankers' Association con- vention in New Orleans, it is shown in the programs of these sessions. A series of special meetings under the title of a “Constructive Customer Re- lations Clinic,” in which a number of present-day bank operating prob- lems will be taken up, will also be a Teature of the convention. At the savings division meetings one of the speakers will be Dr. A. H. Gian- nini of Los Angeles. Philip A. Ben- son, president Dime Savings Bank, Brooklyn, and W. Espey Albig, deputy manager of the A. B. A, also will speak. The State bank division will hear, among others, J. Harvie Wilkinson, jr., vice president State-Planters State Bank & Trust Co. of Richmond. Be- fore the trust section Donald Ran- som, chairman of the A. B. A. Com- mittee on Federal Legislation, of At- lanta, will speak on “Federal Legis- lation as It Affects Trusts.” Senator Carter Glass will speak on “Banking Legislation.” Maj. Angas is to discuss “Crucial Economic Prob- lems.” while Chairman Jesse H. Jones of the R. F. C. will talk on “Rail- roads.” The banking situation has improved #0 much during the last year that a very large attendance is already as- sured. On accountof the Mardi Gras, New Orleans is accustomed to taking care of big gatherings in & most hos- pitable manner. Residents call New Orleans the most interesting city in America. At any rate, it is the sec- ond largest port, its water front be- ing only one of a host of points of special interest. Why Gold Pours Into U. S. Why does gold conitnue to pour into the United States when the ‘Treasury already holds nearly half of all the monetary gold in the world? ‘The magazine Sphere gives this nn-f swer: “One answer is that the dollar is greatly undervalued in the exchanges, which means that it is a good bargain to acquire dollars with sterling, or lire, or marks, or almost any other cur- rency. Another is that Mussolini directly, and Hitler indirectly, took control of all good paper assets of their nationals, which has frightened cap- ital. What happens in one country people fear may happen in another. “Europe, correctly or incorrectly, feels that the greatest extravagances of the New Deal are behind it, and that the credit inflation which has already occurred provides a good op- portunity for speculation in American commodities and equities.” Two other important reasons, of course, are the facts that foreign capital is being invested here in large amounts and that a good deal of this gold is used in the payment of goods bought in this country. Heard in Financial District. Charles K. West, manager of the K Street Branch of the Security Savings & Commercial Bank, rarely misses a meeting of the District Bankers’ Association. Late last week he was informed by an official in the Security Savings & Commercial main otlice that the association’s Fall meeting would be Monday night. On Mon- day evening Mr. West arrived at the Willard Hotel and went to the asso- ciation’s usual meeting place wnere he found a record attendance of bankers. It developed, however, that it was the Riggs Bank educational rally. Cordially urged to remaw. ne decided that he would await the Bankers’ Association meeting, which is next Monday night. The Federal Reserve Bank of Rich- mond announces the recent appoimnt- ment of John 8. Walden, jr., as a deputy governor of the bank, succeed: ing Charles A. Peple, who has heid the position since 1915 and recently e- signed on account of ill health. Mr. ‘Walden has held the title of controller and has been with the Reserve Bank since January, 1919, Gov. George J. Seay states. The Uniformed Firemen's Credit Union of the District of Columbia re- cently mailed out its latest report, showing 471 members and net sales up to July 31, 1935, of shares amount- ing to $18,208. In the first half of 1935 the union made 267 loans, in- volving over $26,000. In the first half year net earnings totaled $1,092.38, ‘Treasurer A. J. Woodhouse_states. Pennsylvania Railroad reports for eight months ended August 31, 1935, net income of $11,660,944 after taxes and charges, equal to 88 cents a share (par $50) on 13,167,696 shares of capi- tal stock. This compares with revised net income of $13,575,477 or $1.03 a share in the first eight months of 1934. v 25% 22Y% 5% 38y 1% 634 26%, 18 23 110 115 10 108 95 14% 24 19% 4l' 107 14 83 16% 59% 47% 10 Am Car & Foundry. 8 Am Chain 2% Am Colortype _ 22% Am Comel Alcoho! 6% Am Crystal Sugar. % Am Encaustie (d).. 2% Am European See._.. 2 Am & Foreign Pwr. 14 Am & For Pw $7 pf. 47 Am & For Pw 2d pf_ 8% Am Hawalian SS(1) 3 Am Hide & L(new)_ 28 Am Hide & L pf(n). 29'%« Am Home Pr (2.40). 17% Am Ice - 4'3 Am Internation: 9 Am Locomotive 32 Am Locomotive nf 18'4¢ Am Mch & Fy (180c) 4% Am Mch & Metals 4'3 Am Mch & Met vte. 13'4 Am Metal 11 Am Power & Light_ 8% Am Pw & Lt $5 pf _ 104 Am Pw & Lt $6 of _ 10% Am Radiator = 15% Am Roll Mills a30c. 31% Am Sm&Refinin 103 Am Sm&Ref pf 63 Am Snuff (+3) 12 Am Steel Foundry .. 3316 Am Stores (+2) _ 50% Am Sugar( 2) 1813 Am Sumat Tob (+1) 9874 Am Tel & Tel (9)__. 7215 Am Tobacco (5) T4% Am Tobacco B (5) .. Gains of 1 to 3 or more points were | scattered over a broad front. The % | close was strong. Transfers approxi T % mated 900,000 shares. + % | Although it was realized that the + | partial Anglo-Italian truce was far +1% | from being a settlement of the war +1% | problem confronting the powers, it | was felt that it was at least a move in the right direction. The forward domestic economic push, however, was | still viewed as the principal market influence. Commodities, including wheat and cotton, pointed downward on the more favorable political cables. Bonds | were steady. Sterling recovered a cent or more in foreign exchange dealings. Shares of farm implement come panies advanced sharply, Case gete ting up 5 points or so. The low-priced | motors were again exceptionally ac- tive, large blocks of Packard flowing over the tape at slight gains. Scate tered utilities participated, but ine dustrials were the leaders throughe out. The coppers eased and the rails were little better than even. Among the favorite gainers, many |at a new year's high, were General Motors, Chrysler, Auburn, Western Union, United States Steel, American Telephone, Electric Auto-Lite, Deere, International Harvester, Johns-Mane ville, Schenley, Du Pont, Westing~ house, Montgomery Ward, Sears-Roe= buck, Armour and Wilson & Co. A loss of around 2 points was suffered by Commercial Credit. While the lessening of war tension abroad was seen as a cheerful mar- ket factor, it was recalled that the financial sector, as a whole, has held | the opinion that the Ethiopian con- flagration would not be allowed to spread. In line with the activity of auto- motive stocks, the announcement of | General Motors of a new type of | inancing, eliminating carrying charges and service costs, was seen as a fore- | runner of similar moves by other | companies in a campaign to expand » sales among lower wage and salary earners. ‘The Associated Press Weekly Ine | dustrial Index jumped from 73.1 to 77, approximating the recovery peak reached last hhruu'y 8 sl mwen - [ & mo arnBemComBuen ® o 60% 17 16% 9 11% 10%, 5 23% 234 6 80% 80% 40! 158 158 91 46 3110 109% 8 6 5% 2 645 643 208 154 154 2 2% % 17% 3% MONEY FOR CONSTRUCTION 0ANS and LOANS ON IMPROVED PROPERTIES 5Y2% FIRST DEED OF TRUST ONLY GEORGEL .
