‘B—4 R LEE D. BUTLER BUILDING HOME New Type Prefabricated Dwelling Being Erected in Kenwood. A new type of prefabricated home to the Capital area, the result of five years of scientific study by representa- tives of Houses, Inc., in the labora- tories of Purdue University, is being built for Lee D. Butler, prominent Washington automobile distributor, on Brookside drive in Kenwood, Md. The home is now nearing comple= tion. and it is expected that it will be ready for occupancy during No- vember. It is called the American mo- tohome, and a number of the struc- tures have been erected about New York City. Last year one of the homes was set up in a New York department store and attracted much attention. The Butler home will be the largest and most pretentious motohome yet attempted. Initiated by Young. The movement which resulted in the motohome was initiated by Owen D. Young, chairman of the board of the General Electric Co.. and Houses, Inc., Is a subsidiary of that company. The house is framed of prefabri- eated steel into which are set fire sound and termite proof panels of compressed asbestos and cement that are practically indestructible and af- ford perfect insulation. In this new home science has harnessed a dozen or more tireless slaves to a mechani- ctal nerve center that responds to the push of a switch to wash and dry dishes, to do the family wash, cause the heating system to reverse its func- tion and become a cooling agency, control the temperature and humidity and filter dust from the air. Many of the principles of the automotive in- dustry have been applied to its pro-’ duction. The modern straight line architec- ture in Mr. Butler’s new home elimi- nates gables and in their place af- fords pleasant second-floor sun decks. Steel casement windows that operate from an inside crank are assembled at room corners rather than their tra- ditional locations, creating a pleasant open-air effect. This arrangement is made possible by air conditioning wit;\ | ability. which cross ventilation is not required. The air conditioning process eliminates most of the house cleaning, as all dust and dirt is picked up before it has a chance to settle and is passed through EAL ESTATE. Automobile Dealer Builds New Type Prefabricated Home in Kenwood Lee D. Butler, well-known Wash- ington automobile distributor, is building a prefabricated home on Brookside drive, Kenwood, Md. It is the first American motohome, sponsored by Houses, Inc., of New York, to be built in this section of the country. The photographs at the top show the progress made in erecting the dwelling, while the drawing at the bottom gives an idea bow the home will appear when completed. Work will be completed in November. d coming to the National Association of 1 Real Estate Boards indicate that the | one thing most of all needed to| strengthen the mortgage structure is | provision to give the mortgage market- Study Fletcher Bill. | To give this important needed ele- | ment of marketability, the State Real | Estate Associations join the National | & filter before it is dehumidified - and | Association in urging the passage Of; recirculated. Large Electric Unit. ‘The kitchen contains a 16-foot elec- tric kitchen unit, largest installed to date. In place of monel metal, stain- less steel is used. An extra large elec- tric range and oversize refrigerator with 12 cubic feet capacity, electric clock, mechanical dish washer and dryer, basin and work bench with drawers and cupboards scientifically arranged to save steps for the house- wife and a special arrangement so that all cooking odors are withdrawn, are some of the features. Thus, the kitchen becomes as fresh and airy as the coolest spot on the lawn. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. The banks of the Nation account for “considerably more of the morte gages and modernization loans that the Federal Housing Administration | is insuring than all other classes of | institutions combined,” it is stated in | a letter which Robert V. Fleming, | first vice president of the American Bankers’ Association and president of Cherry Stain Effective. 1In a Colonial house it may be found effective to stain floors a dull cheery color. Varnish or wax over the color to preserve it. This color makes an | appropriate background for bright hooked rugs and light maple furnish- ings. A proper tone of blue green used as a floor border and recalled in the other furnishings will contrast pleas- ingly with the dull cherry color. 0ld Cannon Found. Dredged from the mud in the ! harbor of Corunna, Spain, a cannon, | eight feet long with a three-inch | caliber, is declared by experts to be | from a ship in Admiral Drake's fleet | which was sunk when he attacked Corunna at the end of the sixteenth | century. Decoration of Walls. An cfective way to treat special wall spaces—such as the area around the fireplace, the recess at the head of a bed or the wall space around a | dining room sideboard—it to have them painted a different tint or color than the rest of the wall. This deco- rative treatment gives emphasis to a cherished article of furniture or lgnds added importance to thg room's center of interest. Warning Signs. H. A. In fact, the banks of the country to date account for considerably more of the mortgages and modernization loans that the F. H. A. is insuring than all other classes of institutions combined. “In view of the fact that we be- lieve the provisions of the national housing act afford a medium whereby | the banks of the country can mate- rially assist in economic recovery and render a further useful service to their communities, as well as obtain a safe and sound earning asset, I feel it 1s desirable to call to the atten= tion of our members that certain ad- ditional measures recently adopted by Congress are designed to make the original law more workable and broad- én the opportunity for service.” tion. | that it will match pieces you already Call for an important meeting to | have, experiment a lttle first on an | shape action on mortgage policy has | underneath part that will not show. e e ‘The house has 12 rooms, three baths and a two-car garage.
