He was forced down over the “lost world,” near the borders of French, Dutch and Brazillan Guiana. His plane crashed less than a mile from Sapokunu, the central village of the Trio, or “white” Indians, who have had no contact with civilization for 30 years. This information was obtained from & Trio Indian by a Catholic mission- ary, stationed at the last outpost on a tributary of the Morowijne River. The Indian was sent back to Redfern with word that a rescue expedition would reach him about the end of December. The Indian informant told the mis- sionary Redfern had said he had no desire to return to civilization for he would be a cripple for life as a result of injuries he received in the crash and would only be a burden to his tather. Rescue Efforts Pledged. The United States consul at Panama | has been advised of the finding of | Redfern and the Dutch and Brazilian governments have promised fullest | co-operation in rescue efforts. When the Indians rushed to the fallen sky monster and found a white | man they thought he was dead, the | Indian, Kapaan, told the missionary. | The tribal plahman. or medicine man, however, discovered Redfern still | breathed. The tribe nursed him back to health but a broken hip rendered his legs useless. The Piahman, who has obtained much tribal prestige because the white man who came from the sky lives with him, has been reluctant to | assist Redfern's departure. Another obstacle in the fiyer’s path is the pres- ence of some 25.000 members of the | Djuka tribe, enemies of the Trio In-| dians, between him and the Guianas. On the south, egress is blocked by the impassable Brazilian jungle. A jour- ney through the Djuka country would involve & 15-day walk and a 40-day canoe trip, which would be impossible for the crippled Redfern without as- sistance. The Trio Indians would re- | fuse to take him to Djuka territory. | Believe Him White God. The Trio Indians look on Redfern as a white god. He has shown them how to make many strange and valu- | able things. They attribute all their | good luck to having a sky god living among them. The Trios have ostra- | | cised themselves from civilized con- | tact because, for years, French slave | hunting expeditions attacked them. | JANE FROHMAN and James Melton | | either singing lessons or dancing les- THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTO BY E. de S.
