United States Governments encoun- tered better buying after slipping off around s of a point in the first hour. Starting the final hour, the Federal list was 4/32ds of a point lower to 5.32ds higher. C., CLEARINGS CLIMB | [westingon Produce NEAR YEAR'S PEAK Week’s Total Shows In- crease of 37.19, Over Levels of 1934 Period. Bv the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, October 3.—Bank clearings are close to the highest total of the year. The aggregate for the 22 leading cities in the United States for the week ended Wednesday, October 2, as reported by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc., was $6,401,824,000, against $4,669,787,- 000 a year ago, an increase of 37.1 per cent. For the preceding week the advance was 20.2 per cent. At New York City clearings were $4,388914,- 000, an increase of 48.7 per cent over the amount reported last year, while the aggregate for centers outside of New York City of $2,012,910,000 was 17.1 per cent higher. The week this year included clear- ings for two days of October, when bank settlements are always heavier, whereas last year clearings for all three days of the first of October were included. Yet the increase for the week this year was very large at many centers. Only one week in 1935 to date showed a larger total than the past week and that covered the period of the half-yearly settlements in July. With that exception, there has been 2| no similar high total for nearly four years, or since the first week of Janu- | ary, 1932. Clearings this week exceeded those of the preceding week by $1,361,696,- 000, while a year ago, when all three days of the first of October appeared, the increase was only $476,542,000. The amount was very much larger at New York City and at Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Cin- cinnati, Atlanta, Louisville, Minne- apolis, Omaha, Kansas City, "San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. Sales Jump. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 3.—Copper metal prices continued to climb in world markets today, with the export price reaching th® best level since July of 1933. Demand for this metal—one of the principal nonferrous metals needed in modern warfare—was active both in foreign and domestic markets, with Ttaly reported to be inquiring for such a huge tonnage that representativcs of principal producers were planning a conference at some European center next week to consider it. Sales of copper were reported at European base ports today at 8.823 cents & pound. Yesterday's markot was quoted at 8.70-8.75 cents, with some sales as high as 8.80. The price of 8.825 cents has not been exceeded since the inflationary flare-up in the market in July, 1933, when 1t touch=d 8.85 cents. ‘The domestic price. protected by the 4-cent tariff, continued unchanged at the level of 9 cents established a few weeks ago and trade estimates placea sales in the New York market for the past two days at 5,848,000 pounds, the largest in some time.
