WOMEN Bedtime S FEAILURES. Stories The Price of Carelessness. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. 4 lessness we ail must DY 2 ERRIISoTand, o her wai. LOSE t» the bank of the pond of Paddy the Beaver, over in the Green Forest, 13 little Ducks, baby Ducks, were hid- fng. There were nine baby ‘Wood Ducks £nd four baby Mallard Ducks. Their mothers had sent them into hiding because they had caught a glimpse of Billy Mink, and the pres- ence of Billy Mink meant danger for baby Ducks. Now, one of the first things that most babies of the people in fur and feathers are taught is to Kkeep * perfectly still when they are hiding. They are taught that no mat- ter what happens they must not move until mother gives the signal to do so. At least most of them are so taught. BILLY MINK SWAM FASTER. So when Mother Wood Duck and Mother Quack the Mallard Duck had sent their Ducklings into hiding the latter had promptly frozen, as the “gaying is. That is, each remained ab- solutely still. They remained that ‘way for a long time. Now, when there are several folks together there is sure to be at least one who is careless. It was so with the little Ducklings. This one kept still for some time. Then as nothing happened, he grew care- less. A fly began to buzz around his head and bother him. Of course, he shouldn’t have moved, no matter how much that fiy bothered him. But he lost patience. He snapped at that fly. Now, up to that time Billy Mink fadn't been able to see one of those Ducklings. He had guessed that there were Ducklings there, because he had seen the two mothers, but look as he would, he hadn’t been able to make out one of those little Ducks. But when the careless one turned his head and snapped at that fly Billy Mink | saw him at once. He caught the mo- tion. He just happened to be looking that way. So instantly Billy started swimming faster and headed right straight for that careless little Duck- ling. Billy made no attempt to ap- proach quietly, for he was sure that that little Duck couldn’t get away. The careless little Duck suddenly discovered a brown head moving through the water toward him. He saw two eyes that were staring at him in a way that gave him a sudden feeling of fright. It came to him that this was an enemy. It came to him | that probably this was the enemy his mother had seen when she sent them all into hiding. He knew by the look in those eyes that he was seen and that it would no longer be of use to yemain perfectly still. So with a peep of sheer fright the Duckling began to swim frantically. He swam out from shore and headed , toward where his mother and Mrs. Quack were anxiously watching. The brown head with those dreadful eyes followed him. The careless one swam frantically, splashing along on the surface of the water and calling for | his mother. Billy Mink swam faster. He could swim much faster than the little Duck and the distance between them was rapidly closing. Mrs. Wood | Duck and Mrs. Quack both started toward the swimming Duckling. They ‘ knew there was nothing they could do. They knew that Billy Mink could kill either of them. Still they headed | for that frantic little swimmer. Per- haps they thought they could confuse Billy Mink. Now, there is no one more at home in the water than Billy Mink. He is & fast swimmer. He shot forward to- Who Are You? The Romance of Your Namae. | BY RUBY HASKINS ELLIS, THXS name was taken from the per- | sonal name Hugh, one which has been popular in many nations for a long, long time. Huges denotes “Son of Hugh” or “kin of Hugh,” although | 1t literally signifies “affability, congen- fality.” Alfred the Great used the| -word hugh to denote comfort. | Various terminations have been added to the name by some branches of the family of Hughes, and some prefixes are noted. ‘The Hughes family is one of great antiquity and derives its ancestry from several of the Princes of Wales. Of ithis family was Sir Richard Hughes, | .who was created a baronet in 1773. The iamily has produced rany not- able sons and daughters in Wales, where it originated, In America we find the name spelled 4in different ways. We have it ‘spelled Hewes, and of this family per- ps the most notable representative history of America was Joseph es, & signer of the Declaration " Indefepdence. James Hughes of lvafiia, was a member of Gen. 's bodyguard. George Rob- * 4 Hughes was active in the famous "Beston Tea Party in 1773. 'The name is represented in all sections of the United States today by various branches of the same family, while many families are unrelated. Un- doubtedly the most prominent man in public life today bearing this name is Charles Evans Hughes, Chief Jus- igice of the United States Supreme Court, who was born in New York (Copyright. 1985 ) ward the little swimmer. His eyes were red with eagerness and desire. The two mother Ducks took to their wings, for, of course, they could fly faster than they could swim. Billy saw them coming. He was not at all distressed, Just before they got there he shot forward, seized the little Duckling and dived. When he came up again he was close under the bank and behind an old log, where he couldn’t be seen. “He was careless,” moaned Mrs. Wood Duck. “He was careless or he wouldn't have been seen. I told you, Mrs. Quack, that you were fortunate to have only four to watch out for. I had 12, but now I have only eight. One was willful and Sharpshin the Hawk got him. One was disobedient and & Snapping Turtle got him. One was foolish and Longlegs the Heron got him and one was careless and now Billy Mink has him. Oh, dear! do hope the others have learned from the dreadful things that have hap- pened to their brothers.” “I hope so, too,” said Mrs Quack. (Copyright. 1935.) "WHAT TO SHORTENING PRICES? Just look at this fellow, and when you are tempted again — think twice. All baboons are noted for their homeliness and bad humor, but as I was saying—be careful. Africa is the homeland of the ba- boon, as is also the country lying on the north of the Red Sea. They range all over this area, though most of them prefer the west coast. This yellow baboon has chosen Nubia, Cen- tral and East Africa in Sennaar. He belongs to the Old World monkey group and is rather low down in the scale of intelligence. He is the largest member of the baboon family, about the size of the average pointer dog. Because his legs are nearly the same length, he walks more easily than he climbs. Over rough ground he can make better speed than his pursuers, but a dog can overtake him if the way is unob- structed. One way to be sure you are inter- viewing a baboon and not a monkey is HAPPENED Yes, but Crisco hasn’t...look at ITS price today Children (Papio, Babuin). to look closely at the snout. The baboon has a very long one and his nostrils are at the very tip. His head is large, his eyes are cast down and his hair grows back as if worn a Ja pompadour. This fellow has a very long tail for a baboon and generally it is carried at & most unusual angle— sort of hoisted at the base and drag- | ging at the end. OMETHING'S been happening to shortening prices! Ask your dealer about it. Ask him the prices of Crisco—and other cooking fats. You'll find that recently most shortenings have gone way, way up. But that’s not true of Crisco. Today Crisco, the finest of all shortenings, probably doesn’t cost any more than ordinary cooking fats. In fact—if you buy Crisco in the big three-pound can—it may even cost you less. When you use Crisco—the healthful all-purpose, shortening, your family can enjoy your cooking at its best—light flaky pies, crisp fried foods, feathery cakes. For Crisco is made only of the purest vegetable oils—creamed and creamed into pure, sweet, fluffy shortening. The males have the most formidable of sharp teeth, but both sexes are well provided in this regard, and they are used with telling effect on their foes. Traveling in troeps, presided over by fierce old males who stalk ahead of their families, they are a strange- looking company, indeed. The babies ride jockey-style on their mother's back, and when the marching army finds it is expedient to move swiscly, the yider digs into his mother’s hair and holds fast as his steed gathers speed. Often some of the younger and brighter-eyed members of the troop— usually the boys—sight an especially inviting feast of berries, insects, the gum exuding from an acacia tree, lizards or the like. Witty Kitty sends one youngster several feet, a yank of the tail of another eliminates number two, and, in a short time, with’ such tactics, order is restored. The leader now feasts. 3 Baboons have nc claim to mildness or a good disposition. In fact, they have tantrums. But they can be tamed and learn to do tricks, and with nothing to ruffie them they keep their tempers under control. They are not afraid of man, and when chased from some cultivated garden he has in- vaded the baboon merely retreats to a safe distance, returning sgain when the coast is clear to stuff his cheek pouches as full as they can be packed. The scientific name of the baboons is from their ancient Greek title, but it is the Arabian or sacred baboon that is represented on the age-old monuments of Egypt, with which we are most familiar.
