NEW YORK, September 30.—Rail- road liens were under some pressure, but other parts of the bond list re- mained steady today. Weakness in the carriers was oc- casioned by a sudden wave of selling in the New Haven Railroad issues. Bonds of Erie, Nickel Plate and South- | ern Railway yielded a point or more. United States Governments ranged slightly under the previous closing levels, with trading at low ebb. Wasflingt&fifihange E SALES. Lumber production during the week ended September 21 will probably top the record of any week since 1931, when revised figures are available. Shipments were slightly above those of the preceding week and orders were 6 per cent above the week before and the heaviest booked since April. Ship- ments were, however, 5 per cent be- low output and new business was 6 per cent below production. All items, as reported by these mills, were ma- terially in excess of the same week of a year ago. The foregoing comparisons are based upon reports to the National Lumber Manufacturers’ Association from regional associations covering the operations of leading hardwood and softwood mills. During the week ended September 21 583 mills produced 242,327,000 feet, shipped 230,359,000 feet, booked orders of 228,438,000 feet. Revised figures for the preceding week were: Mills, 621; production, 242,949,000 feet; pments, 229,956,000 feet; orders, 215,784,000 feet. Western pine, Southern cypress and hemlock mills reported orders above production during the week ended September 21. All but Western pine, redwood and Northern Total softwood orders were 6 per cent below production, hardwood orders were 5 per cent below hardwood out- put. All regions but Northern pine reported orders above 1934. All but Northern hemlock reported produc- tion above that of corresponding week Softwood orders were 44 per | cent above and hardwood orders more than twice those of similar week of 1934. the equivalent of 20 days’ average compared with 22 days and 159 days a year ago, - 2: LOAN ASSOCIATION INSURES PATRONS Protection From Loss Up to $5,000.
