In order to get exact data on the practicability of the project, an aeronautics school was asked to make exhaustive tests. An ordinary six-cylinder engine de- veloping 88 horsepower at 3,800 revo- lutions per minute was mounted on & block just as it arrived from the factory. It was hooked to an air- plane propeller with six fabric belts and run for 300 hours in the open | under varying weather conditions and at various speeds. Acording to the report on this test, the engine functioned perfectly except for one minor break in a tim- ing gear and the belt drive gave only a 3 per cent slippage. Several kinds of gasoline were tried, ordi- nary automobile gasoline being used after the first 144 hours. The re- port faid it proved to be equal in performance to two grades of avia- tion gasoline and gave no trouble whatsoever. The primary advantage of the au- tomobile engine was termed its econ- omy in upkeep and operation. The most important disadvantage is the heavy weight per horsepower gener- | ated, about 5 to 5'2 pounds compared with about 2 pounds per horsepower for the air-cooled aviation engine. “Some sacrifice in performance will | have to be made, but it is felt that price is a decided factor in increas- | ing the number of privately owned aircraft,” the report declared. “A low-priced airplane requires a low- priced engine. f it can be proved that there is & real market for a low-priced mr-\ plane, the automobile manufacturers sive firms. cars on today's market; 100% co-operation given our men makes it possible for you to increase your earnings.
