LONDON, Sepiember 24—Under a renewed demand for the British pound and with speculators holding off pend- ing developments in the international situation, the United States dollar weakened today, closing at 4.92 3-16 to the pound, as compared with the over- night New York rate of 4.9134. Part of the loss was attributed to continental and American offerings, the latter partly in connection with silver purchases. Dealers said the dollar level dgainst gold currencies precluded profitable engagements for gold shipments today. The French franc closed at 74.63 to the pound and the Netherlands guilder at 7.283;. PARIS, Seplember 24 (P)—Three per cent rentes, 77 francs 35 centimes; 4'> per cent rentes, 87.10. Exchange on London, 74.60. dollar was quoted at 15.171%. -— CHICAGO STOCK MARKET| CHICAGO. GUGGENHEIM SEES DIVIDENDS AHEAD Expects American Smelting to Resume Common Pay- ments in Year. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 24.—Simon Guggenheim, president of American Smelting & Refining Co., said today that dividends might be resumed on the company’s common stock during the next year. He also indicated that cleaning up of accumuiations on the second preferred in the near future was a probability. He returned from & business trip abroad on the Norman- die. “If conditions remain as they are” Guggenheim said, “therc is no reason why directors, when they meet early next year, should not consider pay- ment of a dividend on the common stock.” The last payment was 12! a share, on February 1, 1932. The next directors’ meeting of the company is scheduled for October 2, Guggenheim said, adding that clear- ing up of the arrears on the second | preferred stock “is warranted by con- ditions.” Accumulations on this is- sue amount to $6 a share. Concerning business abroad, Gug- genheim said the copper now being bought by Europe was for prepared- ness in event of war. He expressed the opinion that American copper could buy it and resell it. Silver Outlook Bright. P CHICAGO, September 24 (P)— While opposing a Treasury silver pur- chase program which would force the world price of the white metal to $1.29 an ounce, Francis H. Brownell, chair- man of American Smeiting & Refining Co., nevertheless foresaw today a long- range fufure for silver brighter than at any time in the last 15 years. Addressing the American Mining Congress, he said that the funda- mental intent of the silver purchase provision of the agricultural act of 1933 “was not, as is frequently asserted, to buy as fast as possible the | total amount of silver, thus raising the | price to its monetary value, $1.29 an | ounce.” Warns Against Speed. “If the United States should raise the price to the limit,” Brownell said, “it would exhaust its buying capacity very rapidly, and protably long before any stabilization of monetary systems the price of silver would soar like a rocket, explode and fall like a rocket remnant.” He added that the “present tendency is mcrestmgly toward a greater use of silver for monetary purposes.” He | warned that high prices tended to divert siiver from monetary forms.
