Arthur Denver and niece of Gen. Charles W. Denver, for whom | the City of Denver, Colo, was named, died Tuesday in St. Elizabeth’s Hos- | pital after a long illness. She was 71 | and had been a patient at the hos- | pital for the last 18 years. Funeral services were to be held this afternoon at the chapel in Rock | Creek Cemetery, where she will be | | buried. Resident Here 40 Years. | Miss Denver had been a resident of Washington for more than 40 years, hving much of the time in a man- sion on Rhode Island avenue between Seventeenth street and Connecticut avenue. Her father, Col. Denver, was one of the pioneers in railroad devel- E| opment in the West, and subsequently | became a representative for Mexican claims rising out of the Mexican War. The terri- tory’s capital was named in his’ honor. Small Estate Left. When Col. Denver died in 1895, he left an estate of only $1,000 after debts and mortgages had been paid. His wife, Mrs. Eliza Denver, and daughter then went to California in an attempt to regain some tracts of land which Coi. Denver at one time had owned, but their trip failed. Both became afflicted with nervous dis- orders which forced them to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in 1915, where Mrs. Denver died five years later. Reed, 70, president of Larus | & Bro, Inc, and Reed Tobacco com- | panies, died at his Goochland County estate last night from a heart attack. Tobacconist, nationaily known finan- cier and a philanthropist, he had many connections with State politics in Virginia. Senator Harry Flood Byrd, a close ‘personnl friend, and members of the Reed family, were present when he was stricken just before dinner. One of the wealthiest men in Rich- mond, Reed had been a heavy con- | tributor to the Community Fund, had endowed the University of Richmond, the Medical College of Virginia and the Presbyterian Church. In addition to his tobacco businesses, | | he was a director of the Richmond, | Fredericksburg and Potomac Railway, the Chesapeake ani Potomac Tele- phone Co. and the First and Mer- chants National Bank. Born in Richmond September 23, | 1864, he was educaied in the public | schools and, after graduation from high school, joined the tobacco busi- | ness of his uncle, Charles Larus.
