(A—18 ¥¥# MORE WOMEN GET PLAGES IN BANKS Miss Mary E. Anderson Tells of Large Increase in Executive Duties. BY EDWARD C. STONE. There has been a tremendous in- erease in the number of women em- ployed in banks in recent years, Miss Mary E. Anderson, director, Women's Bureau, United States Department of Labor, told the women of Washington Chapter, American Institute of Bank- ing, at the annual dinner of the ‘Women's Committee last evening at the Y. W. C. A. Between 1910 and 1930 the number of women holding executive positions in banks increased from 1,600 to 6.000, she said. ‘Women generally have participated on a large scale in educational activi- ties, the tendency to take advantage of such facilities as are offered by the Institute of Banking probably being the key to their growing importance along all lines of occupational endea- wor. The Department of Labor has been besieged with criticism because women are taking so many jobs, much of the unemployment problem being laid to this reason. Research by the Wom- en’s Bureau indicates this is a fal- lacy, since at least 90 per cent of em- ployed women are working because of necessity and their incomes are meeded for themselves and their de- pendents, the speaker asserted. In conclusion Miss Anderson stated that women control 80 per cent of the country’s purchasing power, hence are deserving of much consideration by the country’s financiers. Women con- stitute 44 per cent of the stockholders In large corporations and own 22 per ent of the stock, she said. Other speakers stressed the import- Bnce of education. Miss Vivian E. Btokes, chairman of the Women's Committee, presided. Including those taking part in the program were Paul ¥. Seltzer, American Security & Trust ©Co.; Charles H. Doing, president of the District Bankers' Association and first vice president of the Washington Loan & Trust Co.; Raymond B. Dickey, dean of the Institute faculty: J. Earle McGeary, president Washington Chap- ter; Edward M. Blaiklock, chaxrman‘ Educational Committee, and Miss Con- stance D. Fogle, member National Women's Committee, A. I. B. After the institute work had been Pproperly outlined for the coming year, there was an elaborate entertainment. Bpecial efforts were launched today for the enroliment of as many women as possible who are employed in the local banks. Bank Auditors Hear Kellogg. Fred C. Kellogg of the Federal De- posit Insurance Corp., made the prin- cipal address at the dinner meeting of Washington bank auditors at the La Fayette Hotel last night. He ex- plained the operation of title I of the banking act of 1935 in its effect upon thc banks and showed the advantages fto both the banks and the public in the permanent plan now in operation. Short addresses also were made by William G. Loeffler and H. W. Wiley. Representatives from the Fidelity- Philadelphia Trust Co. and the State- Planters’ Bank & Trust Co., and the Pirst & Merchants’ National Bank of Richmond, were among the 60 in at- tendance. The meeting was the first Fall gath- ering of the auditors’ section of the District Bankers’ Association. James D. Barrett, American Security & Trust Co., the new chairman, presided. Eccles Selection Gratifying. Bankers here expressed gratification | today over the selection by President Roosevelt of Marriner S. Eccles to the chairmanship of the new board of governors of the Federal Reserve Sys- tem. It is expected he will assume the chairmanship when the new board | takes office on February 1, 1936. Mr. Eccles is at present head of the Federal Reserve Board so will merely be extending his office when the change in the board and the board's Jnethods takes place under the bank- ng act of 1935. There will be six | other members of the board to be| known as governors. ‘Washington bankers were not sur- prised over the announcement by the ‘President. Eccles was considered the logical financier to become head of the new board. His record with the present board led bankers to expect his retention in office. Gov. Eccles is held in high esteem by leaders in the banking district here &nd is considered to have exceptioral ‘banking ability. His address before the District Bankers' Association at Hot Springs last June is still recaided &s one of the outstanding features of the program. He revealed a grasp of the banking situation that was th- tensely interesting. His frank discus- sion of Federal Reserve Board opera- tions was equally enlightening. During the long discussions over the banking act of 1935, while it was pending in Congress, Gov. Eccles gave an unlimited amount of time to con- ferences with officers of the American Bankers' Association that won him mational regard gnd gratitude. Today’s Trading on Exchange. National Savings & Trust Co. stock bpened trading on the Washington Btock Exchange today with 1) shares selling at 100. Later Riggs National common again sold at 210. Lanston Monotype sold at €34 to- day for 20 shares. D e 0 i I ) BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, September 19.—The stock market went into reverse today as profit takers dented the list for declines ranging from fractions to more than 4 points. An active selling flurry in the early afternoon put the ticker tape behind floor transactions, but the trading pace slowed somewnat later. The close was weak. Transfers approxi- mated 1,900,000 shares. Pullman led the downturn, falling more .than 4 points at one time. Other favorites were not slow in fol- lowing. The reaction was attributed partly to realizing on expectations that a sizable correction was due. Nervousness over the European outlook was also said to have induced a little liquidation here and there. Soaring grains in world markets failed to impress the equities divisicn. Wheat jumped the limit of 3 cents a bushel at Winnipeg and got up as much and more at Chicago as war talk and crop prospects attracted speculative buying. Cotton was steady but far from strong. Refined sugar was advanced .20 of a cent a pound.
